EUROPEAN LOSES PEN IN PEDDER ST.
CHARGE BROUGHT AGAINST
CHINESE STUDENT
Yu Wal-ko, 20, a student of Wah Yan College, was charged on romand before Mr. Wynne-Jones at the Central Magistracy yester- day afternoon, with the theft of a fountain pen belonging to Mr. J. P. Robinson, of 6 Gun Club HII, Kowloon.
Mr. Robinson gave evidence to the effect that last Sunday after. noon, coming away from the King's Theatre shortly after o'clock, he was walking towards Pedder Street, when, on the point of taking leave of his wife, he was bumped into by the defendant, who forced himself in between thum. He heard a click, and the next instant realised that he had lost his fountain
He kept pen. the defendant in sight before closing with him, and in acizing his arm, asked him where hia fountain pen was. Defendant im- mediately replied: "I have not got your fountain pen, Sir, You can search me."
Just after thin, another Chinese interfered, which led witness to aak what business it was of his, and to auggeat at the same time that he might have a hand in the. affair. The man replied: "How dare you accuse me of stealing your pen." He was not ALL again after witness had turned de- fendant over to a policeman.
In cross-examination by Mr. G. Ford, appearing for the defence,, witness was positive that he had kept the defendant continuously in sight up till the time he closed up with him. He had not expect ed to find the pen on the defen- dant, and In this connexion, sug- geated collusion with federate to whom the pen may have been passed.
Pen Not Found.

Mr. Ford painteil qut that ir Mr. Robinson was so sure regard- ing a confederate, he would have scen him or have seen the pen passed to him if he had kept the defendant continuously in sight, as he had declared.
Mrs. Robinson gave evidence somewhat similar to her husband.
Inspector Dick, who was in the charge room at the Contral Police Station when the parties went there, said that the defendant was searched there, and a black foun- tain pen was produced which Mr. Robinson anid was not his. A handkerchief and over $12 were amongst defendant's other posses- stone.
Defendant, Inspector Dick con- Unued, looked nervous, but he agreed it was natural to the eír- cumstances.
Giving evidence on hin own be half, defendant said he wuN re- turning home from posting a let- ter when he found himself sud- denly grasped by the arm and the complainant Recusing him ol stealing a fountain pen. Ile denied the charge, and suggested a search. As nothing was found, the European next accused him of having passed the pen to a con- federate. They then went to the Station.
The case was adjourned until Tuesday for a witness for the de- fence to attend.

FOLLOWS U.S. INCREASE IN CURRENCY
London, May 4. Ronowed foreign Helling of dollars was reflected in the sharp drop of tavo cents on the opening of the London market this morn- ing. The drive is attributed to foreign fears of inflation follow- ing the U.S. House of Representa- tives' adoption of the Golds- borough-Fletcher Stabilisation Bill, involving a big increase in currency circulation.

All these developments are followed by changing realty values. Since Shanghai is a rapidly growing city, these values usually increase, but not always. What promised to be a fine residence street a few years ago is now dotted with mill tenements, and the development of an entire section has been changed.
It is our business to know what these changes are -to know them before they happen; to know in advance the trend of developments which will affect the value of land.

DISARMAMENT
LIMITATION OF SIZE OF SUBMARINES
Geneva, May 4.
A great fight over the limitation of submarines began at the dis- armament conference to-day.
Sir Eyres Mousell, First Lord of the Admiralty, restated Britain's case in favour of the total abolition on humanitarian grounds, declaring that the essential objection to sub- marines was the liability of abuse, regardless of the ultimate sequences. He advocated that all states adhere to the rules of the London Naval Treaty.
con-
Submarines, or alternatively the size of submarines, might be re-, duced to 250 tons, surface displace- ment, which was adequate for de- fensive purposes, with a correspond-| ing. reduction in total tonnages,
Sharp Anglo-Japanese differences, developed on the subject of the "aggressiveness" of aircraft car- riers, of which Japan favoured the Abolition. Sir Eyren Monsell argued that a flect without carriers and reconnaissance machines would go into battle blindfolded. He was prepared, however, to agree to a reduction in size,-Renter.
