HONOUR-SLAYING TRIAL BRITAIN'S
SENSATIONS
TEN YEARS' HARD LABOUR
COMMUTED IN
AN HOUR
Honolulu, May 4. One sensation followed quickly upon another when Lieutenant Thomas Massio, Mrs. Granville Fortescuo, and the two U.S. naval rat- ings, E. J. Lord and A. 0. Jones appeared in Court to- day to receive sentence for the manslaughter of Joe Kabahawei, in the so-called honour-slaying case.
All four were sentenced to the maximum penalty of ten years' imprisonment with hard labour.
After the defendants had served an hour of their sen- tence, however, it was an- nounced that a commutation order had been issued by the Governor.
It was the Public Prosecutor, who during the trial had apparent- ly been pressing strongly the chargo against the accused, who announced that the Governor had agreed to commute the sqntonces.

their representatives to state their case to the Com mittee and not to members of the Government.
The Committee's report gave the reasons why they had not gone be- yond a very narrow range of food- stuffs on this occasion and had drawn attention to the fact that the qucation of foodstuffs was bound to play an important and perhaps predominant part in the Ottawa Conference.
Dealing with the iron and steel industry, Mr. Chamberlain said the purpose of the provisional duties vadot so much protection as a prohibition of imports to keep th
