Just after this, another Chinese interfered, which led witness to ask what business it was of his, and to suggest at the same time that he might have a hand in the affair. The man replied: "How dare you accuse me of stealing

FOREIGN SELLING
FOLLOWS US, INCREASE IN CURRENCY
London, May 4. Renewed foreign selling of dollars was reflected in the sharp drop of two cents on the opening of the London market this morn- ing. The drive is attributed to foreign fears of inflation follow- ing the U.S. House of Representa- tives adoption of the Golds- 'Stabilisation borough-Fletcher Bill, involving a big increase in currency circulation.
Dealers in New York declare that only the intervention of the British Government agents yester day prevented sterling jumping over ten cents.-Reuter.

LAND
VALUES
A new street is opened. An apartment house replaces a Chinese village. A vacant lot is covered with Chhese shops and tenements. A creek is filled in. New parks are planned by the Municipal Council.
+
All these developments are followed by changing realty values. Since Shanghai is a rapidly growing city, these values usually increase, but not always. What promised to be a fine residence street a few years ago is now dotted with mill tenements, and the development of an entire section has been changed
It is our business to know what these changes and -to know them before they happen; to know in advance the trend of developments which will affect the value of land."

DISARMAMENT
LIMITATION OF SIZE OF SUBMARINES
Genera, May 47
A great fight over the limitation fubmarines began at the dis- armament conference to-day.
Sir Eyres Monsell, First Lord of the Admiralty, restated Britain's case in favour of the total abolition on humanitarinn grounds, declaring that the essential objection to sub- marines was the linbility of abuse, regardless of the ultimate sequences. He advocated that all sintes adhere to the rules of the London Naval Treaty.
con-
Submarines, or alternatively the size of submarines, might be re- duced to 250 tons, surface displace- ment, which was adequate for de- fensive purposes, with a correspond-: ing reduction in total tonnages.
Sharp Anglo-Japanese differences developed on the subject of the "aggressiveness" of aircraft riers, of which Japan favoured the abolition. Sir Кугея Monsell argued that a fleet without carriers and reconnaissance machines would go into battle blindfolded. He was i prepared, however, to agree to a reduction in size,--Reuter,
