OBITUARY

A POPULAR ENGINEER DROWNED AT SWATOW

Advice has been received from Swatow, stating that Mr. David McCormack, the Chief Engineer on the 8.8. Liangchow, of the B. & S. fleet, was accidentally drowned on Wednesday evening whilst return- ing to his ship from the shore. De talls of the accident are moagre, but our correspondent at Swatow states that Mr. McCormack was re- turning to the ship, which was moored at one of the B. & 3. pon- toons, about 7.30 min. on Wednos day evening, and, it is believed, missed his footing and fell into the sea between the ship and the pon- toon.

Denny & Co., and came out here eighteen years ago to join the China Navigation Company, with whom he has been connected ever since Mr. McCormack was a freemason, and was very popular with his wide circle of friends. Much sympathy will be felt for his relatives at their sudden bereave-

defensivement.

An original bid of three of a sult shows a hand long in trump and with outside strength, but not quite strong enough to make an original two- bid with. It informs partner that with a possible in-card in his hand you can undoubtedly go game. It further informa partner that you have no desire to play the hand at no trump and that he need not have normal trump support to take you to game.
