GIANT TYRE.

The Largest in the World.

What is believed to be the largest pneumatic tyra in the world for road use has recently been produced by the Dunlop Co., England. It is a low-pressure type for commercial vehicles, and has a diameter of 51 in. and a width of 15 in. The load capacity is 4 tons 14 cwt. per tyre, or 9 tons 8 cwt, per axle. Twe almost as of these tyres weigh much as a 7 h.p. "baby" car.

REMARKABLE FEAT. One of the marvels of the motor age is the remarkable speed that it is possible to get out of the British-built "baby" car. was only a few weeks back that the world was amazed to hear that speed of 100 m.p.h. had been official-

Our road test of the Red Hunter Ariel caused considerable interest amongst sporting riders, writes Cyclops in Motor Cycling. There could be no doubt that this machine went really fast, but what did it a number of actually do? As people pointed out, there is little use in giving speedometer figures, instruments definitely these vary over a wide range and are often on the optimistic side.

91.8 Miles An Hour

The timing was done with two watches, one of which was handled by the tester and the other by myself. Whenever there was n variation it was my clock which registered the faster speed. Tires: 9.8 sec. one way, 10.1 the other. In m.p.h.: 91.8 and. 89.1. Mean speed, 89.9 m.p.h.

The silencers were then removed, and as expected by the technical department, there was very little difference. With the timing used, and with the four-valve engine, an absolutely free exhaust only gives a slight increase in speed. Of course, said Mr. Designer, had special cama been employed, it would have been another matter.

Anyway, it certainly speaks very well indeed for the Carblector pro- duct that its removal only cut off a tenth of a second each way. This time the figures were 9.7 sec, and 10 ecc., which equals 92.8.m.p.h. and 90 m.p.h., an average of 91.4 m.p.h.

It was then insisted that I should go back to the works and sco the engine taken down, to ensure that standard. The overything was

THE PATH OF PROGRESS.

Many landmarks characteristic of Chinese cities of old are disappearing in various progressive districts, and the above pic- ture sent by a reader in Nanning, shows the last of this par ticular type of gateway, near the North Gate, which will short- ly be demolished, Nanning, in common with many other Chinese cities, is widening its streets for motor traffle, and bus services radiate to various outlying districts. In passing, we would mention that we welcome such pictures from our readers in the Outporte and interior districts.
