DOMINANT
RUMJAHN.
WINS TENNIS TITLE COMFORTABLY.
FINCHER USELESS.
Employing his entire rupertoire of strokes, knowledge of court cruft and subtlety in tactics, S. A Rumjahn
outplayed yesterday
E. C. Fincher. in the final of the open singles tennis championship to win the title in four sets, the scores reading 6-2, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
Fincher, but a shadow of his normal self, could do nothing to withstand the splendidly directed attack of the Indian, and in con- ceding the first two acts, lost all chances of achieving an ambition which has oluded him for the past three years.
Rumjahn's stroke work was the best he has produced this year. Ile drovo magnificently on both hands deeply to all corners of the court, keeping Fincher strictly on the defensive for three-fourths of the game, and following up ];}s ground shots with accurate over- head smashes and well directed volleys. He completely routed Fincher's endeavours to force the exchanges from the net by means of some perfect lobbing which sent the Kowloon player to the baseline, or leaving him entirely out of position.
Fincher, defeated on tactics, almost lost his head, and com- mitted many
blunders. Even his chop and lice strokes went to pieces and failed to remain effective defensive weapon.
He occasionally pulled out a nice Hooking passing shot in the third set. when Rumjalin WAS rash enough to go up in the net on a straightforward return, but he |could not compare with the Indian in the uther pluses of the game, his lobbing in particular being short and offering enay points. Often when he had secured a pro- mising position at the net. he failed to make the best of it. by returning the ball straight to [Rumjahn, who waited for the op- portune moment tar labuver Plucher's hand.
Inst
Rumjaha was twire about the court, while the ngile lund dreisive manner in which he deal with naything within his reach overhead, spelt success. He won the first two sets by meaTIM some very fine ail-court play. His driving earned him a number fof points, and Fincher's impotency
in returning the ball contributed Ito a great extent to his speresa.
Pincher was seen at his best, which even then was below par in the third set, but the effort came too late, Rumjalin reserving bis vitality. the Courth ༤། when he administered the Coup de gene wahout any apparent effort, taking the match game to love on his own service.
Rumjahn, who was a worthy win- new, now has his unme engraved on lie up for the second time. Be २६.५ far previously won the title back as 1927, and, has made several appearances in the final. Yester-1 day was Fincher's third consecu- tive-final, And he played no better than Jer did ngainat C.A.L. Rumjahn last year, when he was completely outwitted.
Yesterday's results and to-day's
programme are appended:
