INTERESTING PAPER

READ.

Tackling the very extensive Aubject of "Book on China" Professor C. A. Middeton Smith. M.Sc.. yesterday rend a paper to the Hongkong branch of the Eng- Hish Association, when he mude in- teresting and entertaining ference to many of the volumes which have been published.

re-

Books dealing with early China, its history, politles, sociolugy, cus- toms, together with novels were all mentioned by the speaker, whose conclusions regarding the various literary contributions in connexion with the country and its people added much to the in- terest of the paper. Concluding his paper. Professor Middleton Smith suuid:

A World Civilisation.

To this very limited glance at toks about China I have omitted references to many that may be the favourites of some members of audience.1 have patient my had one object anly--to poraunde you to study seriously the problem upon the solution of which the future of humanity rests,

Mtable.

For if the world is to be it must have more organisation than was necessary in former days, Selence has lengthened humani life. diminished disease, increased The productivity of labour, 821 much that every human being could have tolerable comfort with: out long hours of work, If only the world's production and distriba- tim were ethiciently managed. Yet There

many difficulties and dangers before the rising genera- tion.

ANG

10 in simply due Lo human stupidity and inertin that some f the greatest scourges still athiet mankiza. Machines and selentine Inventions can prevent evils. Selence can construct framework within which the good, life is possible; it cannot do more. 1 can cure sickness hut it cannot ensure what a man shall do withi his health. 11 van cure poverty; but it cannot ensure what a man will do with his leisure and wealth.

Wisdom and Knowledge.

The problem is, in the Hual annlysis, one of education. Educa- tion that teaches us to be charit- able as well as clever, to work for knowledge as well as gold; and especially to reflect upon the wis dom of all ages gathered together" in boka. It is because this Association in concerned with such things that I feel it a privilege to address you to-day. For while I believe that science has made the road open to a future happier than at any other previous atage human history, yet it is more true than ever to-day that man cannot live by bread alone.

in

The troubles of the new world civilisation are not caused by man's old enemy Nature, for Nature is no longer formidable, She has been subdued by modern knowledge. Our troubles are due to misunderstandings between in- dividuals nud between nations.

They are genuinely man-made. Alas! that wisdom is so much more dimeuit to acquire than knowledge.

Topic Discussed.

Soveral members joined in the discussion at the conclusion of the address, After complimenting | Prof. Middleton Smith on his very learned paper, Father G. T. Byrno: mentioned that he himself hnd made a list of books and had plac-: ed "Chinese Characteristics" first. After he had gone into China tho speaker said that he rather modi- Sod the

had impressions he gathered. Books written 011 China, it struck him, were very much coloured by the particular). national outlook of the author. The het result of his conclusions word that "Chinese Characteris ties" left a rather imperfect im- pression on his mind. No matter how good a book was it would al- ways be a one-sided view. The speaker commented thol when writers of different

nations all agreed on any particular point then that point could be accepted with safety.

The Hon. Mr. W. T.
