CHAIRMAN REVIEWS THE YEAR'S ACTIVITIES.
PRESENTATIONS.
A successful year was reported by the Institution of Engineers und Shipbuilders of Hongkong at Its annual meeting, held, in the premises of the Institute last evening. Mr. P. T. Farrell pre- sided, supported by members of the Committee.
TELEGRAIII. FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 1932.
Duo to the fall in exchange and consequent increase in the prices we had to pay for our stocks, we bar were compelled to increase prices. They were somewhat re- duced on December 1, 1931, but I would like to emphasise that in spite of the large increase over 1030.In bar profits, the Hon, Tren- aurer's report states that percent- age of gross profit on coat for 1931 was only 37.8 per cent. against 41.4 per cent for 1930, a decrease of 3.6 per cent. I would assure you that the Refreshment Committee are doing their level best to main- tain bar prices at a safety margin, and a fair one to all concerned, and an outside prices favour us so we
In reviewing the past year'shall, in turn, adjust prices to a
more favourable figuro. activities, the Chairman sald:
Gentlemen, Before opening the meating, it is with regret that the Committee report the loss by death of the following members:- Messrs. W. R. Cochrane, H. E. Hendry, C. Mason, E. D. Penhale, I K. K. Staple and J. Roberts. would therefore ask you to atand up as a mark of respect.
You must remember that our overhead Expenaca aro heavy although your Committee have kept a vigilant eye on such), and though we do not aim to finish the venr with a large profit, yet we cannot sustain losses. We are all in the same boat and I would there- fore ask you to put your trust in vour Committee with the aure and certain knowledge that they are doing their best to please all con- cerned.

It is therefore all the more encouraging that your Committee are now able to submit a statement of accounts which, they trust, will There merit your commendation. are, however, a few points on which you may require explanations. They are as follows:

The Library. Turning to the library: It in really gratifying to note the con- tinued popularity of the Library. This is evident by the increasing cirealation of books which, accord- ing to the Librarian's report, was 14.687 in 1981, being an incrense of 3,318 over 1930 and 4,357 over 1929. To run a Library in etlicient manner is no easy task and our thanks are due to MP. Latham, the Hon. Librarian, for the hard work he has put in during the past year in an endeavour to keep our Library up to date and gratify the taste of our "reading" members,
to Mr... Our thanks are also duc Mycock for carrying on during Mr. Latham's short absence from the closely Colony. The Library is akin to the Reading Rooms, and I would here remark that many com- the plaints were received during past year of periodicals being torn or otherwise mutilated. This is very regrettable and I might say has caused your Committee serious concern,

From a perusal of the House Committee's report you, will have observed that certain improvementa bave been effected, but much still remains to be done as and when
