EFFORT.

The Committee appointed, by Lady Peel to make arrangements for the special observance of Em pire Day in Ilongkong along the lines auggested in a letter from Mrs. L. M. S. Amery, wife of a former Secretary of Stato for the Colonies, met at Government House last Thursday, Lady Peel took the chair, and there were also present Mr. W. H. Bell, the Hon. Mr. J. P. Braga, Sir Shouson Chow, Mrs. E. Cock, Major V. E. Dolos, Mrs. R. M. Dyer, Mr. Tong Shlu-kin, Lady M. Ho Tung, Mr. A. Hicks, Mrs. J. Owen Hughes, Mrs, R. H. Kotewall, Mr. G. P. de Martin, tha Hon. Sir Henry Pollock, the Hon. Mr. W. E. L. Shenton, Mrn, W. T. Southorn, Mr. J. H. Taggart, the Hon: Dr S. W. Tao, Mrs. A. II. Walker and Mrs. Kinnard Watson.

After Mr. Shenton had, at Lady Peel's request, outlined the objects for which the Committee had been appointed, the nueting agreed that a special effort should be made un Empire Day this year, along the lines suggested in Mes. Aniery's letter. In particular. it was de cided to make every effort to ensure the consumption of Empire pro- duels on this day, not only in house. holds, but also in clubs, hotels and restaurants; and that stores be asked to co-operate in making spe- cint displays of Empire gooda.

Other Idens approved were or- rangements for essays on Empire produrts by students of Govern- ment English and grant-in-ald schools, and for the bringing into Hongkong of New Territories pro- ducts, to be on sale at central de- pats for the beneft of the produ- cers. The hope was alvo expressed that the Union Jack would be flown by businers houses and residence on Empire Day; and it was decided that a basket of roses be deposited in front of Queen Victoria's statue, as Empire day the anniversary of the birth of Her late Majesty.

PETTY OFFICER'S SUDDEN DEATH ON HERMES.

The death occurred suddenly on Tuesday of Joiner Petty Officer D. Brunning of H.M.S. Hermes. Com- plaining of pains in the chest, ho reported himself to the ship's sur gcon on board and Bome fow minutes after being admitted to the sick bay, collapsed and expired.

Only 47 years of age, the deccas- ed had been on the China Station for a period of 18 months. He was greatly liked by his shipmates who mourn his death.

A native of Chatham,) the late Pelly Officer Brunning is survived by a widow, who is at Home. A sad feature fa that his only son, then 14 years of age, and destined for a career in the Navy was killed in the disastrous fire, which, it will he recalled occurred during a chil- dren's display at Chatham three years ago when a number of young Ives were lost.
