not entirely wore favourable for tennis yesterday after the rain of the past few days, and as a result the standard served up in the open matches was not worthy of the importance of the ties.

The stand court was occupied by E. C. Fincher partnered by L. Gold- man and Y. Hachiuma who was paired with M. Kinoshita, the Japanese couple losing in straight sets in the third round of the doubles event.
