WOMAN'S 35 YEARS
IN ARCTIC.
WHERE A WIFE HAS NO. WORRIES.
After 35 years spent in the re- mote atrolches of the Arctic, a woman has returned to Dinnipey, for a short time to experience the comforts of civilisation.
She is Mr. I. O. Stringer, the Canadianwife of the present Archbishop of Rupert's Land, and she went out to the Arctle wastes as a bride.
To fellow-Catindian women Mrs. Stringer has just given Bome of her experiences among the Eskimos.
Mrs. Stringer was the first wo- man to set foot on Hershel Island. At that time the Hudson's Bay Company or the mounted police | had not established posts on the jaland.
Her first home, she stated, was a one-roomed but of sod. Later it was replaced by a house of timber, brought north from San Francisco -- 2,000-mile voyage, and it be came known as "Igloopukk"-the biggest house.
Seventeen years passed, Mrs. Stringer said, before the first con- vert rewarded their offorts.
Skilful Women.
At first she was terrified when stalwart Eskimon with pierced lips and bedecked faces, big head- dresses and shaven heads came into her house, brandishing the knives they always carried. She
soon learned, however, that it was only curiosity that brought them,
Both the men and women were
exceedingly clover in making boats without nails, and fashion- ing vessels from horns.
The womenfolk of these "Child- ren of the Arctic" were adept at the dressmaking art, Mrs. Stringer said. Using a queer curved knife, they could fashion a gar- ment with amazing speed.
They were sticklers for style, too, she remarked, each Harment: being inset with white fur.
Worries of housecleaning had yet to be experienced by the women of the North. The Eskimos could build an "igloo" in an hour, which meant that when one house got uncomfortably dirty the family moved into another.
Language barriers proved an obstacle to missionary work at first, but, by degrees the Eskimo attended a little school catablished for their banofit. Enter other "special schools" were set up.
Mrs. Stringer, did not dwell on the hardships of her life in the North, but told of her two eldest children who were born on Herchel Island with her husband is doctor, nurse and attendant.
