TO think it all started with the tin of an almost insignifi cant little thing like a hat-and the timely rejuvenation

of that dashing bit of femininity, the Empress Eugenie!

But such is the case and now the big problem is to live up tu it. You've seen the hats the stores and windows are flooded with them. And you've also noticed, even upon cas val obovation, the decided lines of the new dresses and suits -the sleeve details-the moukled-to-the-figure look.

But what about shoes! You must certainly keep in step with the rest of your costume. You have a really new prob- lem confronting you. What kind of shoer did this most pop ular rejuvenated empress wear?

One of the smartest Fifth Avenue individual shoe salons has put liule suggestions here and there--finally achieving that perfect finish which says, "There, I am just a little bit different, yet not too drastic to be smart. At least 1 con com- pete for honors at the bottom of the wardrobe in spite of that very daring bit that tops my lady's lovely curly hend.”

Shnecraft has oxfords to accompany that new dashning derby you have been seeing here and there. One shoe is a rather high cut oxford of simple styling, but fashioned of the very imest grained alligator procurable. The heel is perfect- neither too high or too low.

Another oxford on similar lines is made of suede, which, by the way, is just about the most worn leather this Jall. This paticulas morlel has a gracefully designed heel, tip and fox- soy of baby alligator. And the way the heel and foxing curve into one gives the most lenderizing elect to the ankle. no matter from which angle it is seen.

a dainty and sensible shoe

HOWEVER, if you wish to appear not quite so debonair

and prefer to accompany your derby with a shoe more feminine, there is a delightfully dainty one-eyelet tie called "Suzanne." This shoe is made in a combination of suede with inlay at the side of shiny patent leather, which is finished with a striking white piping. If you have a black and white costume you may change the black bow for a white one.

You can now get the smartest and fanciest of shoes in sen- sible heiglu heels. Whether or not you may thank Empress Eugenie for that, it has been coming about lately.

One model of this graceful high-low heel, from Shorcraft, is made of green suede or any of the other new fall colors you may choose. It has a scroll design over the vamp and quer- ters in a lighter tone of pearlized kid,

And another model of this group, named after Eugenie herself, is entirely made of patent leather, a revived leather which has made many new and faithful friends. You really du feel dressed up in patent leather, and this particular shoc appears to be made all in one with a very unique and slender- izing cross strap that fits lightly over the instep without any button or clasp. It is held together with elastic, which kides itself in the back somewhere-and is guaranteed not to come apart.

pin seal for opera pumps

FOR the new lightweight woolens and smart suits, the most chic shoes are of pin seal. A plain tailored opera pump with wing tip and heel of calf to match its pin ses! foundation is very good looking. Of course the favored leather heel is the only thing acceptable for this type of aboe..

A typical sport shon (Spectator) which is very smart, is a fine brown calf moccasin trimmed only with very sim. ple but chic feather thong stitching.

Rck Buads, combined

in a unique way with inlays of patent leather ...but the striking note is the white kid plping which separates the two materials In both shoes and purse.

And here's the catch. The saddle and front piece are artistically decorated with tiny nail *heads—and how "Eugenio” it if Even the empress herself would have created a sensation with such a shoe.

To cap the climax there is an entire ensera- ble, which includes not only the shoe, but a matching hand bag, a belt and a bunch of feather effects made of kid and bedecked with the nail heads (gold or silver) which can be nattily placed on almost any of the new fall hate.

the most brilliant of all

course, these new period influences which started with the Second Empire express hemselves by for the best in evening shoes. There they get the opportunity to use the gayest and most brilliant ma- zerials and patterns. There is a most-persistent revival of the all-over gold and all-over silver slipper for evening.

They are as grand and elegant as anything ever con- ceived in the most luxurious empire days of Napoleouis times. Fashioned `of a new gold and silver mesh of the finest threads loosely waren and used an inlays in combin tion with gold or silver kid, these are the exquisite works of art that will grace the dancing feet of this season.

There are sandals, and most sandala than ever. Besides - the gold and silver ones there is another very new one niade of a combination of dull crepe with shiny satin which is particularly effective. This is to be dyed or wom as all white, if you prefer, with your new white satin "gown

Just one word to the wise. In spite of all this intricate new, the proverbial opera pump is still present--for there' are many who prefer this type of shoe to any other. This, dainty little almost insignificant bit of footwear is not to ba outdone, by all these new revivals`and historic influences going round about town,
