THE ANTI-MUITSAI
SOCIETY.
THE NEED FOR STERNER MEASURES.
ANNUAL MEETING.
The work of the Anti-Multumi Society in Hongkong was reviewed at the tenth annual meeting held on Saturday at the auditorium of the Chinese Y.M.C.A.
The meeting was well attended and was presided over by the Rev. Li Kau-yan, the Chairman of the Society,
The English Secretary of the Bociety, Mr. J. D. Bush, cited cases to prove that the muitani evil has not been stamped out entirely in the Colony and the Society has still to overcome obstacles before its final goal is reached.
Reviewing the work of the So- ciety during the past year and outlining the programine for the future, the Chairman, Rev. Li Kau- yan said: "On the occasion of the tenth annual meeting of our Society, I wish to convey my most sincere gratitude for the untiring support of the Hon. English and members of
Chinese Becmittee, and all our?
the General
fellow members for their constant advice and needy assistance in the year under review. Without this help the Society could not have achieved such gratifying results.
"Since the formation of this So- Jalety in 1922, we have worked with only one object in view, namely that of securing freedom for the Thousands of muitsals, and i1 WILA not until numerous obstacles ad been overcome that In 1929 our Inbaur received full recognition from the
ent who British Government enforced a decree strictly prohibi- ting the muitsai system. The oli
lal decision, undoubtedly, brought grent encouragement to our fellow workers. in this Society and all lovers of humanity.
Government's Sympathy.
After referring to the Govern- ment decree regarding registra- tion. Rev. Li and that this co- operation from the Government showed that the authorities were equally determined to see that the antiquated muiteni institution should be done away with for good and all.
Continuing, the Chairman said: The Government has made the possession of multaal unlawful but our work is by no means ac- although it has been facilitated by the off-
cial co-operation. Thin Society will not relax in its efforts until all the muitsals have been froed and the entire evil eradicated.
The reasons for the continuance of our society are many.
AL- though the officials have An- pounced that over 4,000 multsals have been registered there aro still many instances where the owners have declined to effect registration. This Bort of irre- gularity in exposed from time to time in the newspapers-and-by fines imposed by the Bench. Theat cases support our belief that the Society will have to maintain ita work as a guidance munity, giving those to the com-
constant ad-
In-
vice and uttering warnings against abuses under this cruel sys- tem. It le only through extonsive dissemination of propaganda and teaching that the communit" on the whole can be convinced that in this age of enlightenment the muitaal institution is most buman. Furthermore, cases have been found to show that the buy- ing and selling of muftsals has been going on in the Colony, and this in itself is a direct oncoursge- ment to the crime of kidnapping. Task Not Yet Accomplished. Registration shows that
there
the
are 5,000 to 6,000 muitsais still in bondage in Hongkong. Therefore we cannot hope to accomplish task of doing away with the sys- tem completely at once. Accord- ingly we desire to extend our work by the establishment of more branches and redoubling our of forts in diatributing propaganda to make the people understand (Continued on, Page 10.)
