THE COUNTRY MAKES HISTORY.
THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT'S success at the polls has stag- geringly exceeded every most optimistic prediction. There has never been anything like it in the history of politics. The avalanche which swept the Conservative Party into oblivion in 1906 was a mere nothing beside the disaster which has overtaken the Labour Party
The country has given its verdict beyond any possibility of doubt. More than half the results have yet to come in, but, the almost complete, annihilation of the Labour Party is certain. Two hundred and twelve results had been declar- ed up to three o'clock this morning. The Labour Party had won 23! One hun- dred and eight of their seats in the last Parliament had been surrendered to National Government candidates. The smashing of their representation has been accompanied by the defeat of seven Labour ex-Cabinet Ministers, including Mr. Arthur Henderson, Mr. J. R. Clynes, Mr. Kerbert Morrison, Mr. Tom Shaw and Miss Margaret Bondfield.
The whole of industrial England appears to have turned Conservative. The twelve divisions of Birmingham voted solidly Conservative. The eleven divisions of Liverpool have returned ten Tories. Manchester's ten seats have all been won by Conservative candidates, Sheffield's seven divisions have been equally un- animous, and there were five Labour members before the Dissolution."
The Rt. Hon. Mr. J. H. Thomas scored a great personal triumph at Derby, heading the poll with 49,257 votes, with a Conservative occupying the second seat. Their majorities over the Labour candidates were over 25,000.
The turnover of votes is nothing short of sensational. Sir Philip Cuncliffe Lister increased his majority at Hendon to 51,000! This is the most crashing of the Conservative victories, but everywhere the swing has been similar.
EARLY INDICATIONS OF LA BOUR DEBACLE.
The substantial Nationalist turnover was indicated most clearly in the very first result to be declared, namely, Hornsey, where Mr. Euan Wallace, one of the Government Whips, turned his 19329 majority of 9,511 into a majority of 33,529 in a straight light with Labour.
The general trend of the election was also shown at the mutset. Three of the first five declarations were recorded as Conservative gains, the Tories recapturing all three seats at Salford, which they lost to Labour at the last election. majorities represented a huge turnover of votes. POLLING IN THE FOG.
The
Polling in London closed in a fog which, it is thought, caused the loss of a number of votes. Many workers on their way home were delayed until after the polling booths had closed, auf other would-be voters failed to find their polling booth in time to vote, while not a few declined to leave their tiresides to turn out in the fog.

Despite the murkiness large crowds awaited the results in Trafalgar Square and other vantage points, but the numbers were not so great as in previous elections owing toby Conservatives, their majorities cinemas and theatres keeping open in order to announce the being 12,622, 11,031 and 2,907 results,

Mr. Herbert Morrison, the ex-Minister of Transport, and one of the most respected of the Labour leaders, was defeated by a woman at Hackney South.
In a "safe" Labour sent, Sir Ben Turner auffered a defent by nearly 10,000 votea! Mr. Arthur Greenwood, ex-Minister of Health, was victim of a 17,000 turnover.
In Liverpool, where at the Dissolution, there were six Conservative Members and five Labour members, the city ousted all the Labourites with one exception. In the Scotland Division, which had its firat contest for 21 years owing to Mr. T. P. O'Connor being always returned unopposed, Mr. Logan retained the seat for the Labour Party.
