COURTING A TRAGEDY.

(SPECIAL TO "TELEGRAPH")

ΠΟ THE LIST of those who condemn as foolhardy Sir Hubert Wilkins' daring plans to make a voyage to the North Pole under the Arctic ice-cap in a sub. marine, is to be added that of Mr. Tse. Tsan-tai, the well-known local geologist, who presents a highly interesting theory on the conditions obtaining under the ice-cap, and is convinced that the "Nautilus" never reach the Pole.

can

Mr. Tse Tsan-tai's theory, which is particularly striking as being advanced for the first time, is that the ice in the region of the Pole is frozen right through to the sea bed, and that the formation of the tremendous Arctic ice-cap resembles a gigantic ice-mushroom. The

Trapped by a fire break- ing in the early hours this morning out with disastrous suddennoss, two women liv- ing in a hut in the Kowloon City district, were burnt to deathi Their charred ro mains were recovered from the blackened ruins after the outbreak had been ..ex- tinguished.

The hut, of the usual native vll- Inge type, built of mud and wood, was hidden away in the hillside in that part of the district known as "Little Kowloon." The fire broke out shortly after midnight, and be- enuse of the remoteness of the

locality, some delay ensued before it received attention.

When firemen reached the scene, the structure was a mass of flames, and it was evident that nothing could be done to save it. For an hour the conflagration blazed un- checked, and at the end nothing re- mained of the building but a heap of ashes..
