ASHION this spring has decided to throw away just about everything and start all over. For this year, every spring costume should be spontaneous, alive and responsive to the personality of the wom- an who wears it. The combinations of color will be unlike any ever produced before, and some of the con
trants of fabric against neighbor fabric will be as vacon• ventional as ice cream smothered in onions but, 1 may say, vastly more appetizing.
Calor contrast is of course no novcity, and everyone is familiar with satin-with-crepe and chiffon-with-lace, but the innovations which will spring to the eye along with the gay little springtime banners of the crocus this year will be to fashion as new and charming as a mating of the orchid and The 1010.
An upheaval necessarily has taken place in the dye pots. For a season demanding entirely new versions of color, the familiar combinations such as navy-and-yellow will be abandoned in favor of lighter-than-navy or darken-that- navy with a yellow about the shade of lemon but not the shade of egg yolk, which was familiar, and charming, too, a year ago. These gentle contrasts, an arresting and yet so suave, must be maintained consistently not only in the silks, both plain and printed, but also in the woolens.
A
WHITE jacket may have a black skirt in the same crepe woolen, whereas the blouse will introduce an additional contrast of white Moleskin satin. A gray flanul skirt will boast a brown jacket of Rio Ondo tweed. A riple Belogia chiffon.evening frock in white will gain a perky note in its fat Renee crepe jacket of apple green, The most delicate Jordan almond pink chiffon dancing dress will be finished bewitchingly with a jacket of Aphrodite printed chiffon in stained-glass-window blue relieved with the same almond pink of the dress,
And all form the paramount fashion of contrast! A dress may be print above and plain crepe below with a jacket in the print of the top of the dress. Another may re verse the order.
The only sure test fer a correct contrast choice is an hour before the mirror. If the mirror reflects just a mass of op posites, the picture is wrong, but if the color and fabric differences blend in an effect of complete synchronization emphasizing the individual perionality, the costume is right, The fabrics for this spring are no jumble of uncertainty. They easily incorporate themselves into the costume without precipitating any breath-taking, violent contrasts. A match- ing endive green wool anesh forming the sleeves and shoul- ders modestly accents the lines of the wool crepe-Roman- tique town frock with brief bolero jacket.
THILE the rought, spongy rustic woolent predominate.
W old time favorites such as smeath, nightly-woven
worsteds and other crepe de chine weights mark the newest trend in woolens. This means the starring of serge. fine will, reps and tight crepes. This trend is as yet, dis- creet and those who like to think ahead in their purchases will do well to plan a costume with one of these worsteds in the coat using the unexpected color of the pattern in the small design printed crepe or Moravia dress as a liaison. with the pastel ground color of the print acting as the con-
trast.
Eyelet embroidery. jerseys, and shantungs, comprise noteworthy repetitions in spring dress fabrics, but Petal- Krepe double georgelles, triple Belogia chiffon, printed silk remain, printed Chunda cantons, flannels and worsteds are the newest material entries.
Color contrasts in the development of ensembling of cas tumes proves the place of the monotone crepe frock. The marie women will choose more often the muted colors, indicating the return to dusty pastels, whereas gaiety will be the more popular priced keynote. These more sober lates for spring may lead to an outbreak in the summer of a surge of vivid hues. A subdued and flattering Colenial rose 13 one of the newer silk shades, this color practically dispossessing turquoise from its seat of supremacy in many shops. Piccnst yellow, pistachio green, hydrangea blue. terra cotta, chamois beige and lapin beige are some of the colors now being mentioned for interpreting the Chunda canton day frocks in muted pastels.
~MALL-SPACED designs and all-over small prints are:
scheduled for the greatest style importance in daytime wear, while almost every woman will wish to introduce in her wardrobe at least one lively phase of fashion through an amusing stripe, plaid, dot print of Persian derivation. These gay, entertaining prints supposedly sprang from an association of ideas of designers with the coming French Colonial Exhibition in Paris, and are unsurpassed for play dresses, pajamas, or any other purpose which permits toss
dignity to the winds.

Crisp cottons are smart only if a sufficiently, good one is selected to warrant excellent workmanship, and will remain only as long as the crispness lasts. So look to your Wool dresses remain outstanding, wool crepes and voiles being the most important. Rompins and other wool crepes often are varied with small armurer in the weave. The rustic coatings and suilings introduce irregular flamme or random reads to relieve the patterns of the flat light wenver, but almost allogether in monotone.
There is widespread discussion of the importance of the all-fabric idea in spring coals. Spongy woolens and the newer smooth worsteds will vie for these honers. Darker than-navy, black, putty beige, and beige and few 2017 beiges and grays will dominate the spring coat woolen for atrect types, Most everyone is looking forward to this fathion retum of beige with interest. This marked woolen trend has brought out many printed silko stressing gray and beige touches to relate the gray and beige woolens. Colored ground prints are paired with the dark basic ensemble shades for contrast.
