NUBJECT TO the successful outcome of negotiations at present in hand, the benefits of a wireless telephony service will be available to the Colony, with a reasonable expectation that, within two years, a tele- phone subscriber in Hongkong will be able to put through a call to England, with subsequent extension to embrace all the important cities of the world,
An intimation to this effect, which is of first-rate importance to the Colony, was made by Mr. J. Scott Haraton when presiding at the annual shareholders' meeting of the Hongkong Telephone Co., Ltd., this morning. It was also stated that the work on the Canton trunk line should be completed by August this year, when facilities for making thirty simultaneous calls will be available.
A warning was given that increased subscription rates might be brought into operation unless there is a material recovery in the dollar in the near future, although every 'undeavour would be made to keep rates at their present low level.

The Committee urges His Ma- jesty's Government, as the largest individual shareholder in the Canal Company, to use its in-

EXPLANATION ISSUED.
THE CONSERVATIVE volte-face in declining to co-
operate in further meetings of the. Round Table Conference in India, is roundly condemned by London's evening newspapers, Mr. Baldwin being openly accused of betraying his friend, Lord Irwin, The "Evening News" says that the Duke of Plaza Toro was Bayard and Rustum combined compared with Mr. Baldwin..
The Conservative leader now' declares that his surprise announcement does not represent a new de- claration of policy. It is characterised as Mr. Baldwin's considered view as regards the right procedure. He does not consider that the time is opportune for the holding of further Round Table discussions.
The new spirit in India is illustrated by an incident in a foreign-cloth market in Bombay. Congress volunteers attempted to interfere with the sale of foreign cloth and were badly knocked. about. The dealers, however, decided to close down the market for a week, pending the arrival of Mr. Gandhi to put matbors right.
