DEVASTATION.
POPULACE STUNNED BY CATASTROPHE.
TOWNS, ROADS, RAILWAYS RUINED: APPALLING LOSS OF LIFE.
HEROIC WORK BY NAVY.
THE COLOSSAL scale of the New Zealand earthquake disaster is being revealed by slow degrees. There has been appalling loss of life. Towns, roads, railways, telephones and telegraphs have been destroyed. The whole face of the countryside has been changed in many places, practically the whole of the North Island being rocked by shocks of terrible severity for nearly two hours.
The most reliable account of the catastrophe at Napier comes from Commander Morgan, the captain of H.M.S. Veronica, who played a hero's part in the subsequent rescue work. After the little sloop's crew had escaped annihlation almost by a miracle, he rushed ashore with all available men, found the populace stunned by the magnitude of the disaster, and himself organised relief work.
of killed runs into hundreds, but as most of the victims are apparently buried in the debris of ruined homes and shops, no reliable estimates are yet available.
