Cold Weather Danger of Carbon Monoxide.

FATAL EXHAUST GAS.

[By Israel Klein.]

Cold weather, n tough motor, a weak battery, a closed garage-and the annual winter ingredients for carbon monoxide poisoning are here,

Year after year, despite' warn- ings, police all over the world re- port more deaths from this automo- tive peril. Yet cognizance of a few simple rules should avold this danger.

These rules apply mostly when the car in cold and is to be started while still in the garage, for car- bon monoxido polaioning occurs only where there is a lack of fresh

Being unable to smell or see it, we are unaware of its presence, un- less we remember the circumstances under which we may fall victim to it. These are a closed garage and a running motor.

Therefore the primary rule to remember, to avoid trouble, in to free that the garage door is wide fapen and held open by a good catch. If the door swings shut while you happen to be working on the car, trying to get it started, the ocen sional puff puff of the motor may l enough to cause the first harm ful effects of the exhaust gas, Once it begins to take effect, the vletim hardly knows what is hap pening to him thereafter.

All this in done in a very short time, for carbon monoxide acts quickly and without warning. Its action is accelerated even further if the motorist happens to be exerting himself, such as cranking the engine.

The first thing to do with a vicilm of carbon monoxide poison- ing is

to get him out into the of fresh air. He needs plenty oxygen to replace the deadly gas that has filled his lungs, and crept into his blood and tissues.

It takes considerable oxygen to do this, and since the .nir about us Even with the garage door open, is only one-fifth oxygen, the next as soon as the motor is started the step is to call for an oxygen pump car should be backed out and and a rescue squad. Many police warmed up outside the garage.

Because of varying dimatic temperatures and because of the fact that their ronds afford an

excellent proving ground for motor care, South American naturista take delight in arranging raids (tours) to test the stamina of nuto- mobiles their choice.

Mr. Julio Plesch, Jr.. the Nash denler at Concepcion, Chile, and Mr. George Blackburn, Nash owner and sportsman, recently undertook and successfully completed auch n touran International raid from Concepcion-Buenos Aires -Montevideo-Valparaiso San- tingo and return to Concepcion.

Their journey across country made in six days and a distanco of approximately 6,000 kilometres was covered by the rugged travellers and their sturdy Nash without n singlo mishap-mechanical or other- wise.

Some of the high lights of their Interesting Journey are revealed by Mr. Plosch In an interview with the press, as follows:

"First of all I may say that the car used in this raid has answered in every respect the requirements of the raid, having been able to overcome at all times the difficul ties encountered on the ronds.

"After proparing the Nash car for a long and dimeuit trip, the gradients in Argentine being very steep, we left Concepcion for Lon" quimy, where we remained. Early the following day we continued our trip crossing the cordillera, which is very difficult to cross

on the Argentine Republic side.

"The entire distance was mado without the ear having failed once. We passed the towne of Zapala, Nucquen, Rio Colorado, Babla Blanca, Mar del Plata, in order to reach Buenos Aires în six days.

"Our Nash car got into muddy roads, from which we could get out only by building, with the help:

is necessary to take along every- thing for the car as well as for One's

personal use. "In Buenos Aires, as well as in the other cities visited by us, they asked us for full details of the

trip, and on hearing our comments they congratulated us in view of the successful manner in which the rald was propressing, the purpose which was to test not only our physical resistance, but also the re- afstance of the car used for the purpose.

"Our visit in Buenos Aires was very short, but we were warmly Directors of the greeted by the

Auto Club Argentino."

Asked to give his impression of the car that he used in his trip, Mr. Pleach replied enthusiastically: "My Nash Single Six, 1980 model, has answered at all times to the great efforts required of it. We are charmed because both in the sandy grounds in Argentina, as well as on the gradients on the cordillera, it did not fail us on one singe occasion,"
