NEW FRENCH NAVY POLICY,

FAR EASTERN FORCES TO BE REINFORCED.

A NEW VICE-ADMIRAL.

In an important statement re- garding the expansion of French Naval Forces in the Far East, the French Minister of Marine (M., J. L. Dumesnil) recently said:

"Regarding of naval forces in the Far East," he declared, "I have decided to place at their head a Vice-Admiral instead of a Rear-Ad- miral in order that the General Officer who enmmands them may not find his position diminished un a point of the order of precedence,

"The question of precedence has a considerable importance in those far-placed latitudes, where are cen- centrated numerous foreign men-of- war. We can, moreover, be led whenever required, to reinforce our naval force. In this connexion. I am advised that the dispatch-loat Regulus has just gone to China waters, I have, accordingly, Commander-in-Chief of chosen, as our naval forces there, Vice-Ad-

I am strongly in favour of the reconstitution of our naval divi- sions: it is for us a necessity. We are going to allot two of our dis patch boats built for Colonial sta tions. LADIES' NIGHT AT Y.M.C.A.

EXCELLENT PROGRAMME GIVEN LAST NIGHT.

Mr. Ross expressed the view that it was better to close down now ra- ther than continue lo run the Club at a loss,

An amendment was made by a member, who moved that the Club be allowed to continue for another three months. The suggestion fol flowed a discussion during which it was felt that, rather than close down the Club altogether, the pos sibility of keeping the Club alive by acquiring smaller premises, in- creasing subscriptions, and reduc tion of expenses other means should be considered.

The amendment, however, was put to the meeting and defeated,

The main proposal for the clos ing down of the Club was then put before the meeting and was carri fed by a majority of 13 votes to 4- A further proposal was made, and agreed to, that the present officers remain in office for the purpose of closing down the Club. It was in- dicated that the Club be closed down at the end of the current month and that by the end of the year the affairs in this connexion will be closed.

Although the Club will be closed down for financial reasons, the As- sociation will continue to function and carry on its aclivities as here- tofore..

Votes of thanks were passed at the close of the meeting to Mr. Fel- tham for his services as Honorary Secretary and to the President for the able manner in which he pre- sided at the meeting.
