IGHTEEN, or slightly more than 18,

foi that matter, you will be fascinated by the evening gowns designed for this winter's debutantes.

A new elegance pervades the whole dis play. A new luxury makes each gown indi vidual and distinctive. A new demureness emphasizes the fact that it is again natura! and start for young women to be sweet and dignified, praise bel

Every new gown that will be shown to you will have great length to its credit. If you are still under 25. do not insist on a train. Leave them for the older sophisticates. But choose ankle length, even all-around floor length or the new dancing length called slip- per tip length.

You will need and want skirt fullness for dancing. But unless you intend having more than one evening gown to start the winter-sea-. son, do not have an exaggerated type of skirt. The fitted-to-the-hip kind, with flaring fullness below, is a much better bet. And it is much more becoming to most girls.

Luxurious materials go to make dream dreases of the evening things you will wear this winter, Brocades. lames. lovely velvets, luxurious fiat crepes and satins, lace, pets, cliffons and new materials that gleam and glow in soft colors.

If you are blessed with lovely shoulders and have come through the summer with an even tan across them, no bathing suit strap marks showing, I advise one of the new drop shoulder gowns. They are so new. So de. mure. So utterly lady-like in the way they conjure up young ladies of another era who personified modesty and charm.

Sleeves are extremely cute on some new evening gown. Puffs, little bell-shaped yan ities, ruffles or just a little epaulet. They are young and sweet.

I have left to the last the manner in which

your new gowns will be apt to girdle thema- zelves. Mainly because it is such a matter of your very own individual taste. If your waist is the traditional wasp waist, you can afford to have one of the shirred girdles that end in a huge bow or some decorative flowers in the back.

If not, you can quite as well have a very narrow belt of self material, with a jeweled buckle in front for a bit of glitter to dress

you ep.

IF you are looking for an elegant gown for winter dancing, a gown that is prac tical, but daintiness personified and utterly lovely, too, I suggest a light blue faille taffeta which uses an unusual V neck, both front and back, with the rear V extending much lower than the front.

It has a charming cut, fitted to a low hip- line where any number of flaring gores join the body in rounding line, falling to even floor length all around. A jeweled belt buckle, in rhinestones, is the only decoration added..

II NOTHING, after all, is more elegant

and distinguished than the black gown. A very graceful one is made of black chiffon and black lace, with the new drop shoulders fashioned of two ruffles of the lace, the top of which extends across the front of the bodice and outlines the decolletage in the back There is a swathed girdle of the chiffon, and all across the back sprays of vivid orange flowers are caught into the chiffon.

III. IF you happen to be a ravishing beauty, and you may as well admit it

to yourself if you are, you should choose an unusual gown for your coming out party, one that will capitalize that unusual gift which is yours,

An arresting gown of this type combines

red panne velvet and matching red silk net in a most unusual manner. The bodice and body portion to a low hipline is of the velvet, fitted very beautifully, with a low decolletage and rather narrow straps over the shoulder. Below the hipline, which has rosettes and bows of the velvet, the tulle billows out into a very flaring skirt that touches the floor all around. With matching red slippers, you will be a sight to remember.

IV. IF you want a striking, stunning gown, one that will give you great elegance. there is nothing to compare with black velvet, touched off with real lace.

A regal one is made in the mode of the Mauve Decade, with a fitted bodice and an unusually cut skirt that has most of its full- ness falling toward the back. It has an un length in the back, ankle length in front. even length skirt, one that falls to a short train

From the front of its armholes Point de Venise lace extends across the arm and around the rear decolletage outlining it. like revers.. This lace makes sweet short sleeves, little caps for the top of the arma. And it adds a youth- ful touch to a gown that otherwise might be a bit too sedate.

V IF you are being introduced formally

IF you

to society this winter, you will find a lace gown a genuine standby. It is so fragile and graceful looking and yet really so sub- antial

An especially lovely one is en import from Mirance, made of Normandy lace, în ecjú, with a foundation of pale pink. It is an ex- quisite little gown, made with a demure ahirred round neck and puff sleeves, a skirt that has three circular sections, making it very full at the lowest one. A girdle and sleeve cuis eic of soft brown velvet and a corsage of mosa roses adds its demure touch...
