HAZLITT'S CENTENARY.

INN WHERE ESSAYS WERE WROTE.

HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, NOVEMBER 1st, 1930.

A hundred years ago on September 18, William Hazlitt, literary critic and essayist, died in London. Our picture showa The Pheasant Inn, or the Winterslow Hut, as it is sometimes called, where Hazlitt was visited by Charles and Mary Lamb and where he wrote the Winter- slow Essays. The inn lies a little to the north of the village of Winterslow on the old road to Andover, just over the Wiltshire border. Hazlitt spent several months here yearly after

AN ITALIAN GRAPE FESTIVAL.

At the village of Impruneta, near Florence, a vintage festival was held recently on a grand scale. During the afternoon there was a procession of elaborately decorated cars drawn by oxen, and later in the day there was dancing in the streets and visitors were regaled with the fruit of the vineyards. Our picture shows women of Impruneta wearing their festival dress and carrying tambourines in front of the big vine vat, which was an outstanding features in the Festa of the Grape procession. TOURISTS IN SOVIET RUSSIA.

Moscow's Appeal

to Moscow-chiefly Americans la ebbing, after a season in which it reached the highest levels since the revolution.

Trustworthy figures are not yet available, but it seems likely that the total of visitors will have been considerably above the 5,000 mark. A mere nothing, of course, for Paris or Berlin. But for the So- viet capital, with its three suitable hotels, the influx problems of ac- commodation, feeding and inter- preting were formidable.

Unfortunately, the highest point of foreign tourism coincided with the lowest point in recent years conditions. for Soviet living Visitor's were impressed by the obvious signs of industrial con- struction, by the matchless under. takings in social betterment. "But they were no less impressed "by the equally obvious signs of hard- ships for the population evidenced by food queues' and general grumbling.

Source of Puzzlement,

To the Moscovites, in fact, the droves of Americans, camera and guide-book in hand, were a con- stant source of puzzlement. The sight was familiar enough on the streets.

"What do they want to see ?" more than one Russian has asked this writer. "How we stand in queues? How badly we are dress. cd compared to them?"

This inferiority complex some- times even showed itself in a thick irony. "Here they are, monopolis- ing the only decent restaurants in town, drinking up our vodka and sunoking up our cigarettes.......
