ROAD DEATHS IN AMERICA.

IGNORANCE A. FACTOR IN ACCIDENTS.

VICTIMS OF "HOGS."

Ignorance or violation of the principle of "right of way" is the greatest single factor of automo bile accidents in the United States, according to the analysis of the causes of one hundred thousand accidents during 1929, which has been made by the American Auto- mobile Association.'

"Road hogs" who ventured on the wrong side of the road In passing other cars caused 34,197 of these accidents. But, strangely enough, while they are the cause of most accidents, they relatively cause fewest fatalities, Next to "hogging" on the road came speed- ing with one out of six accidents falling in this category; and with death's one in fifteen.

The highest percentage of the deaths one in ten-was occa- sioned by running off the road;' but only one in ten of the acci- dents was attributed to this cause." The passing of another car at a curve or on the crest of a hill pro- duced one in fifteen deaths, but only one in ninety accidents.

Another less comprehensive study is that of Professor Richard i Kirby Yale, who investigated the causes of accidents in the State of Connecticut during 1929, He finds that the bulk of accidents were due to human carelessness, four-fifths of all the accidents being either directly or indirectly the result of mistaken human be- haviour.

He finds, however, that acci- dents have decreased during the past two years in proportion to the total mileage driven, as estimated from the sale of petrol within the State, and attributes this to the extension of traffic warnir zs, both lights and signs.

Connecticut, alone of the East- ern States, had no speed limit, but strictly penalises reckless driving, which covers excessive speed in congested areas, passing on cur- ves, and failure to keep to the proper side of the road or similar prima facie evidences of reckless-

ness.
