An extraordinary story of how he became a drug addict was told from the dock at Maidenhead last (Berkshire) Police Court month by a man who had posed as Major Geoffrey Wilmer.
He was followed by Detective: Inspector Prothero, whose ex- posure of Wilmer was is crushing as the latter's story had dramatic.

There were six summonses against Wilmer of being in un lawful possession of heroin at Maidenhead, and to these he plead ed guilty. He pleaded not guilty to two other summonses of being in unlawful possesion at Henley. He and these were withdrawn. was sentenced to six months' im- prisonment.
Wilmer entered the dock wear- ing a smartly-cut grey suit, white gloves, and a lavender .coloured soft shirt and collar. As the six magistrates, one of whom, was wearing a tennis shirt open at the neck, filed on to the Bench, Wilmer took off his gloves, screwed a monocle into his right eye, and bowed to them.

The prescriptions presented by Wilmer were made out to a Mrs. Melville. She was the wife of an Italian and at that time was in unfortunate condition of health. Wilmer was known at the chemist's as Major Melville.
When it became known to the police that heroin was being dis pensed to Mrs. Melville immediate inquiries were set on foot under Chief Inspector Prothero. Wilmer stated to the inspector that Dr. Starkie supplied him with signed sheets of notepaper in blank and that whenever he (Wilmer) re- quired a drug he filled up the sheets, which thus became pre-) scriptions, and they were present- ed at the shop and the drug ob- tained,

Wilater's Story. Wilmer told a remarkable story of his career during the past few years. lic said that early in 1927 he had a very bad accident and had to have a serious operation on his left leg which probably saved the limb. He was in a nursing home, in Vincent-square, London. Wilmer continued:
That was the first time in my life; as far as i know, that I was given heroin.
The culminating point of my suffering came in March 1928, When I got double septic bronchial preumonia. I was moved to an other nursing home, and for many days lay between life and death. I was kept alive purely and simply by heroin.

I am ashamed to tell you I began taking heroin again. I was pretty near the end when I was perauad- ed to return to this country under another name.
Then, he declared, he was cured of drug-taking...
My plea to you is that, when 1 realised that I was a drug addict. from that moment until the time I was cured I was not acting with a normal mind. I was completely abnormal for nine months.
'The Other Side.
When Wilmer sat down he be- gan slowly to draw on his white gloves.
Chief Inspector Prothero said- that Wilmer had told him that e had been an officer in the Essex Regiment and had retired with the honorary rank of captain.
