charged with being a party to the commission by Able Seaman W. F. Hobbs, formerly of H.M.S. Seraph of an indecent`assault at the Royal Naval Canteen on the evening of September 21, this year.
After an all-day hearing the Court found that the charge against the accused had been prov ed, and sentenced him to twelve months' imprisonment and ordered him to be discharged in disgrace |from HM. service.
Last week Able Seaman Hobbs was convicted of indecent assault and similar punishment was meted out to him
In giving evidence of character, the accused's friend, Mr. H. Lowey, Gunner (T) of H.M.S. Sterling, said that as officer of the accused's division, during the period he had been on the ship, he had always found him to be very trustworthy and very efficient in his work:
Lieut. Commander Sim sald that the accused bad peen in the ship for only a few months during which time he had been given some very responsible jobs to do. Witness stated that he had had no trouble with the accused and con- sidered that he had done extraor dinarily well since he went to the ship.
·
After all the evidence had been
taken, Mr. H. J. Armstrong, for the accused, addressed the Court. and submitted that the
evidence was not sufficiently strong to con- viet, pointing out that it was all circumstantial, there being no direct evidence.
The Court, however, after con- sidering the evidence for a lengthy period, delivered their finding as stated above.
