Decisions of Highway Conference.:
DANGEROUS ACTS.
A committee of the National Conference on Street and Highway Safety, which was organized in 1924 by President Hoover, then secretary of commerce. luys its hands upon the most pronounced causes of traffic accidents-and all of them point to one effective remedy, that of education.
Violation of the right
of way, this committee reports, is to blame! for a great part of the life and in- jury toll. So is jay-walking. So is driving on the wrong side of the road, excessive speed and lack of attention to the particular vagaries of the highway. All these, it is agreed, might be avoided by proper regulation.
But the best way to avoid them, it is also agreed, is by proper education not only of the motorist and the pedestrian, but training of the child in his school years so that he will grow up with a -proper sense of safety and caution in walk- ing and driving. That training should not be left altogether to the teacher or to specialists employed in their development of the child. That, of course, presupposes the proper sort of training or traffic attitude on the part of, the parents, display of this training in their driving habits and constant guard against the least infractions, parti- cularly when the children are around. It means, fundamentally, education not only of the children, but of all of us to the point of driving carefully, considerately, safely at all times and under all con- ditions.
It means starting with the older folks and setting good examples for the next generation's motorists..
