"APPEAL AGAINST
DECISION.
RECENT FINE IN MUI-TSAI CASE CONFIRMED.
À case recently decided under the Anti-ui-sai Ordinance was ro-heard at the Central Magistracy. before Mr. T. S. Whyte-Smith, yes- terday afternoon.
The defendant. Au Yeung Hon- king, of 562. Nathan Road, Kow loon, was originally charged with taking part, on or about April 13. 1930 in a transaction, the object of which was" to transfer the custody or control of a minor under the age of 18 years for a valuable consideration ($100).
The womun was convicted and fined $500, with the alternative of three months' imprisonment, while another woman, who was formerly in the defendant's employ as a domestic servant, was fined $50 or one month's imprisonment.
Mr. M. K. Lo remarked, that his Worship had intimated he intend- ed to hear the case de novo but to shorten the proceedings he (Mr. Lo) suggested that both sides should accept the depositions as they stood, with the right of Mr. Barrow to recall witnesses for the prosecution to put uny questions he wished to thoni.
His Worship replied that he had thought it possible Mr. le would want to cross-examine the witnesses.
Mr. Lo remarked that his case was that there would be only n violent conflict of evidence between one of the witnesses for the pro- secution and his own client. He did not suppose he could vet much out of her in cross-examination. He was not pressing for the ease to be heard de noro. 1 Mr. Barrow was satisfied with the prosecution. he (Mr. Lol was satisfied, but he understood that Mr. Barrow wanted to recall one of the witnesses and. put further questions to her.
In reply to his Worship. Mr. Barrow indicated that he was also calling another witness.
