DILUTION WITH PETROL
Not because it wears out or loses its lubricating power." Good oll never does that. But in service it. becomes contaminated or diluted, and it is because no mechanical method of cleansing it has yet been devised that it is necessary to change the oll in your engine.
Oil thing out and apparently loses its body because it rets diluted by petrol, that is the fuel which blow by the piston heavy, unconsumed portions of the rings into the crankcase. A cer tain amount of dilution goes on in every engine, but is not harmful unless it exceeds approximately some 5 per cent, of the volume of foll in the crankcase.
Factors affecting oil dilution are numerous and cannot be dis cussed at length here, suffice it to say, however, that poor non-
volatile petrol, an improperly adjusted carburettor, undue use of the choke or strangler, badly- fitting piston rings, too low an engine temperature, or a badly ventilated crankcase all aggravate dilution.
Since dilution is gradual it is worse with an engine which cot sumes but little oil than with one which consumes a lot, it also affects a small crankcase more than a large one because of the volume of oil concerned.

The Motorist's Opportunity.
Here, then, is a chance for motorists to make themselves really useful, and at the same time to get a great deal of amuse- ment themselves. The increasing
popularity of motoring week-ends, the number of wayside inns visit- and the consequent increase in cd, opens up before the motoriat a fine chance of adding to the records of the "Inn-holders' Com

There are hundreds of these old inn signs to be found scattered all

external sources.
It is impossible to generalise on the subject of oil changing, but most engines need a change every 2,000 miles, and some even less, So much depends on the type of engine and its conditions of service, but motor car manu- facturers give reliable informa- tion on this subject in their books instruction.-Courtesy Shell..

Eight of the United States re duced their motor vehicle fatality record during 1929. The states were: Louisiana, Montana, Dela- ware, North Carolina, North Dako- ta, Oregon, South Dakota and Ver- mont. The District of Columbia also fell into this class.
Another old Cornish hostelry once proudly bore the sign "God Encompasseth Us," but as the years went by this gradually de- generated into "The Goat and Compasses."
There is another Amusing example not far from London. The ina which was formerly call- ed "Cato Le Fidele," in honour of Cato the Faithful, governor of Calais, now rejoices in the title of "The Cat and Fiddle." swingin” sign pictures ап abnoramally solemn cat playing an altogether impossible fiddle.
The
Down Norfolk Way. Norfolk also, has one or two examples to offer, such as "The Swan with two Nicks," or notches, in the beak to dennote the owner- ship of the bird. Now the sign shows a freak awan proudly carry- ing on its shoulders two necks instead of one.
In Lincoln there is "The Three Goats," which really should read
The Three Gowts," or sluices.
Again, "The Boulogne Mouth" of historical fame, being named in honour of the victory in Boulogne Harbour, is now known as "The Bull and Mouth."
Apart from corruptions, there' are, too, inn signs wihch are generally misunderstood, For example, the "Beetle and Wedge" seems at first sight rather an irrelevant combination of titles,: until one realises that a "beetle" is not the unpleasant little black. creature, but a large mallet or hammer used to hammer in the "wed-e."
