Singing for the screen and sing- ing for the stage are so different that, in a way, they are entirely separated. So says Lawrence
of "Children Gray, "hero Pleasure," Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's drama of "Tin Pan Alley," which opens to-day at the Queen's, who sang his way to screen success in "Marianne" and "It's a Great Life." For the microphone listens closer than any audience, according to Gray.
"On the stage you can't get a song over unless you project it to the top row of the gallery" the actor stated in a recent Interview. "This means volume all the time: And still you have to try to get subtle meanings into it.
"Imagine talking to a person and doing it at the top of your voice. How many little inflections could you get into what you say? It's by lowering the voice, some times to a whisper, and by chang- ing its tone, that you get the finer shadings of meaning.
"In talking pictures you can do this. The microphone is close to you. You can give subtle little twists of meaning to your song by A certain inflection or intonation that would be entirely lost in singing

"Fast Company."
When he was a boy, Jack Oakle had two ambitions. He wanted to be a great film comedian and he home-run wanted to be
a great hitter. He couldn't decide which career to choose. But with his appearance in "Fast Company," which is now showing at the Cen- tral Theatre, his youthful ambi- tions are realized.

In this picture, based upon famous story of the base-ball dia- mond by Ring Lardner, America's leading humorist and the creator of the "You Know Me Al" series, Jack Oakle is the great comedian he wanted to be and he is also the great home-run hitter in the guise of "Hurry Kane."
"Rio Rita."
Once upon a time Dorothy Lee, 18, diminutive and pretty, lived for 17 years across the street from the Radio Pictures' studio. From the age of 14 she tried to "crash the gate." She couldn't even get extra work. She took up stage dancing and went to New York. Fred Waring, the band leader, saw her and got her a part in his musical comedy, "Hello Yourself.""

copation," Radio Pictures' first all- musical talkie. William Le Baron saw her and gave her a long- term contract and now Dorothy, who looks like a John Held, Jr. girl come to life, is back across the street from the Radio Pictures lot. She doesn't actually make a face at the gatemen who used to stop her. But she does give her ear's cutout a little tap 28 she rolls in to the lot.

Dorothy is one of the featured cast in "Rio Rita," the all-talking, all-musical Radio Picture ex- from Zieg- travaganza, adapted feld's bit, which opens on Thurs- day at the Central Theatre.
If you heard her sing "Do Do Something" in "Syncopation" you'll want to go back several times to hear her sing "We Two Together" in "Rio Rita." Bebe Daniels, John Boles, Bert Wheeler, George Renavant and Robert Woolsey are in the cast, Norma Shearer in "The Divorcee.” Normá Shearer's versatility reaches fresh fields in her new | Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer talking pic- ture triumph, "The Divorcee," which opens on Friday at tho Queen's Theatre.
Rising from the sordidness of "Mary Dugan" to the sparkle of "Mrs. Cheyney." and then abrupt ly turning to the youthful buoyancy of "Their Own Desire," the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer star hus experienced another startling metamorphosis in the most daring role of her career,
In this bold plunge into marital discontent, striking deep into the foundations of that traditional institution, Miss Shearer emerges with new laurels, achieving the finest performance she has ever accomplished in her characteriza- tion of the modern wife who fights fire with fire and dares to tell her wayward husband of her tri-
tling. Miss Shearer negotiates a most difficult role, endowing the part with the finesse of a stage veteran. Indeed it is engimatical that this young player, lacking even a brief contract with the theatre, could be so deftly capable, of the fine shadings with which she sketces this tragic figure in sympathetic tones.
