Story of a Trader. Lei Wu, the first defendant, sald that he was the accountant of the Chung Tai shop at 58, Reclamation Street. The tins of sardines were given to him by a travelling trader, who had asked him to rent out a store. He was keeping the sardines until the trader came back to claim them. The trader himself paid the rent for the store at 16, Reclamation Street, and got some men to look after the store till he arrived. Witness denied having told Inspector Taylor that he did not belong to the Chung Tai firm. When the Inspector

The boy who was found in the premises by the Inspector was not a foki of the Chung Tai shop. He was a coolie who used to do odd jobs for witness. The trader paid the man' his wages. The trader had not come back to help witnesa out of this trouble. The landlord had complained to wit- ness that the sardines emelt badly, but the trader had not told him that the tins were damaged by water. The only thing which the trader had told him was that he GOVERNMENT HOUSE. Flower of the Desert (Lohr). (the trader) had bought the tins at an auction and that some of them were broken and some dam- aged. Witness did not know that it was such a serious matter. He only did it as a favour to the trader.

Ip Sau-san, the boy who was found at 16, Reclamation Street, said that he was employed by the trader as a caretaker in the store.

Story Disbelieved. Mr. Whyte Smith (to the first defendant): I do not believe your story about the travelling trader; and even if I did I would | still convict you. It was you who got these premises for the trader and therefore you are virtually the tenant of this place. You knew perfectly well that these tins were damaged and broken,· al- though you did not realise the seri- ousness of what would happen. Each one of these tins might have caused the death of some chaser. I have to take into con-

pur-

sideration the fact that the public must be protected. It is a most scandalous thing and terribly seri- Ouя $500 or three months' im- prisonment.
