TOTE CLUB TO PAY BETTING TAX.
CLAIM AGAINST CROWN UNSUCCESSFUL.
A claim against the 'Crown by Asso- the National Pari-Mutuel ciation, Limited, of Green-street, Leicestersquare, for repayment of betting tax amounting to £906, was unsuccessful in the King's Bench Division.
Mr. Roland Oliver, K.C., for the Association, said the case arose as the result of a decision of the House of Lords in March last year that a company which conducted a club using a Totalisator for gambling on horse racing was not liable to pay the betting duty. The Association carried on a pre- cisely similar business to that of the club in the House of Lords
case.
They claimed: return of the money on the ground that it was paid under a mistake of fact and not of law.
The Attorney General submitt- ed that the suppliants were really book-makers. How could it be said that the transactions carried out at the club were not bets?
He agreed that under the de- cision of the House of Lords the
betting was, between the members
themselves and not with the club, and that the members paid their money into the pool on the clear understanding that 3 per cent. duty for betting would be de- ducted.

In some woods near Boulogne' a young girl, Maria Bense, aged 16, was suddenly attacked by a man who attempted to assault her. She screamed and the man tried to strangle her, eventually throw- ing her into a pond. The timely arrival of her father, who heard her cries, resulted in her rescue, while her assailant took flight. It is recalled that a num- ber of similar attacks have occurred near Boulogne at Touquet,
