CANTON GOVERNOR ON THE NEUTRALITY ISSUE.

"SĄTANIC SYSTEM." FOOLISH EXCUSES.
The current issue of "The China Fundamentalist." published in Shanghai under the editorship of the Rev. H. W. White, D.D., has some interesting comments on the attitude of the "St John's Review," Hongkong, edited by the Rev. H. V. Koop, M.A., towards the ques- tion of the Church's attitude to the Soviet. It states:
The Editor of this Church paper does not approve of the proposal that prayers should be offered for the persecuted Christians In Russia, because, he says,
"It would be difficult for the ordinary man to pray for those who are persecuted without con- demning the persecutors or, at least, equating them with the forces of evil. In the present case to do that almost amounts to saying that the Russian Revolu- tion was a bad thing and ought never to have happened."
As if there were any doubt about this! Quite in line with this thought, he continues his argument by saying that
"Many believe that in the long run the Russian people will be the happier and the better for the Revolution."

"It is rather curious," said Mr. Whyte Smith, "that a charge should be brought under the military Or dinance. The Ordinance is to sup press people from going to military lands for the urpose of sketching. But still It is the only section un- der which to bring the case."

The Magistrate:-The Ordinance only refers to the Navy and the Military, and it seems to me that it requires to be amended to cover the Air Force. It is called the De fence Sketching Prevention Ordi-

Sub-Inspector Elston: The pre- mises were originally taken by the Navy. I take it that the military assumption is that any person on the grounds was there for the pur- pose of sketching.
The Magistrate-I don't think that this lady was there for the purpose of sketching.
