TUSSLE WITH A 'THIEF.:

DETECTIVE TACKLES MAN WITH CHOPPER.

SEQUEL IN COURT.

A detective's tussle with a thief who was armed with a chopper, was described to Mr. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy this morn- ing when the man was charged with stealing a blanket from Tainam Street, and also with assaulting a detective in the execution of his duty.

The defendant admitted the first charge only.

In his evidence the detective said he saw the defendant loitering in a scavenging lane off Tainam Street early yesterday morning and later he saw him with a blanket in his possession. Witness went to one end of the lane while he requested another detective to remain at the other end. As the defendant was about to emerge, he was challenged by witness.

TOTAL LOSS $5,600.

A belated report has just been made to the Harbour Office authorities of a mishap suffered by a trading junk during the typhoon which passed near the Colony on July 24.

Although it had two anchors down, the force of the wind soon told on the junk. At about 8 p.m.. the direction of the wind changed with increasing force, causing the cargo to shift, and the junk finally capsized and sank.
