Pontiac owners speak in glowing terms of the never-failing service their cars give, year after year. When they are touring-on distant trails far from help when then they need extra power for tough hills, sticky mud or sandy stretches-when they need flashing acceleration to take advan- tage of openings in traffic, or a quick, smooth stop-Pontiac is faithful to their demanda...

And one of the reasons for Pontiac's remarkable rise in popularity is because it gives this performance day after day. When loss sturdily built cars are beginning to get tired of working-Pontiac is alert and Botive-in its prime-ready to give a type of performance never be. loved possible at the price!

GOODYEAR “AIR WHEEL"

Safety Factor in Aero- plane Landings.

DUAL FUNCTION.

Goodyear has developed a new Air Wheel, increasing the safety factor in airplane landings and take-offs. The new tyre is revolutionary in dosign, a full balloon casing mounted directly on a hub attach- ed to the plane undercarriage, eliminating rim, spoke and wheel. It is called the Goodyear Air Wheel and the name is appropriate Inasmuch as the casing bus the dual function of a tyre and wheel.

Goodyear sees in the air wheel an opportunity to make costly au- xiliary shock absorbers unneces sary, thus adding to the useful load- carrying possibilities of heavier- than-air ships.

Other outstanding advantages of this new type tyre include extreme cushioning for landings, traction in snow, ice, sand and mud, nearness to perfect streamline, elimination of ordinary ground looping, and greater security in cross wind and deflated tyre landings. The air wheel gives larger air volume at extremely low pressure and extend- ed experiments and tests show it to be capable of sustaining huge loads under ordinary service con- ditions.

Goodyear engineers report the brake tests to date give promise of revolutionary results for airplane

use.

The cusing is mounted upon a specially designed hub, furnished with or without an internal ex-

similar panding brake,

to well known standard types. Smooth and efficient braking has been at- tained in tests, aviation engineers have stressed the desirability of quick automatic action.

Planes have been landed without! any perceptible jar or jolt on the new air wheel; test pilots report- ing that landings were, so soft that it was impossible to tell when actual contact with the earth took place. Engineers further point out that such landing cushioning should length the life of the air- plane, sparing the framework from racking and wrenching.

The secret of anti-bouncing and absorption of shocks in the air wheel type of tyre lies in the low pressure and large air volume,! Goodyear engineers explained. The shocks are, dissipated in the greater air volume attained in the casings.

The huge sectional diameter" of the air wheel as compared to its height, produces a flat or web-foot effect when landing, making it possible for a plane to make con- tact safely on soft ground, snow, and rough terrain where high pressure tyres might cause a crash.

Elimination of the regular wheel takes from the airplane one more clement of danger-collapsing wheels. Further safety is claim ed inasmuch as tests prove con- clusively that the straight side- beads with steel wire rings prevent the casing from climbing the hub flange.

Planes mounted on the air wheel have shown a tendency to take off easier and with less power than when the ordinary high pres sure tyre is used. This, engineers explained, is due to the ability of the plane to rise from two to five inches and still keep contact with the earth through the wheels. Thus it follows that obstructions on the ground or uneven spots will more readily be absorbed by the tyres themselves and not hinder progress of the plane.-

Actual production and distribu- tion of the new air wheel is well under way..
