OPPOSITION PRESSES.

It was announced in Parliament yesterday that the Govern- ment has decided to invite the two Opposition parties each to appoint three or four delegates as members of the Indian Round Table Conference, which is shortly to sit to. deal with Indian constitutional problems.

The Premier was pressed by Sir Austen Chamberlain and Mr. Lloyd George to include Sir John Simon or some other member of the Statutory Commission on the Conference, but he replied that at present he thought this would be a grievous mistake. What was needed, he said, was representation that would be efficient in bringing ideas to the Conference and in examining the questions brought before it.

CHAIR AND RICKSHA FARES.

Suggestion Made For An Increase.

THE H.C.L FACTOR.

At Thursday's meeting of the Legislative Council, the Hon. Mr. R. H. Kotowall is to bring forward the question of permitting an increase in chair and ricksha fares.

Mr. Kotewall will ask the following question: "In view of the prevailing high cost of, living, will the Government re- view the scale of fares pre-. scribed in clause 34 of the Regulations made by the Gov- ernor in Council, under the Vehicles and Traffic Regula tion Ordinance 1912 in respect of public chairs and jinrick- shas with the view to making a reasonable increase in such scale?"

The Bill provides that for every trunk, call between Hongkong and Canton of three minutes or part of three minutes duration a sum of $2 will be charged and for every additional three minutes or part of three minutes à further $2.

Ordinance Made Clear.

The objects and reasons of the Bill state:

"The objects of the amending Ordinance are to make it clear that the concession given to the Hong- kong Telephone Company Limited by the Telephone Ordinance, 1925, applies to trunk lines laid in the Colony for the purposes of com- municating with places outside the Colony and to provide a scale of charges for trunk calls and a means of obtaining security for such charges.
