ATTEMPT TO RECOVER NANKING LOANS.
Canton, July 24.
In connexion with the loan to Nanking, amounting to $23,400,- 000, Mr. Fan Ki-mo, the Finance Commissioner of Kwangtung, leit: on the Empress of Russia yester- day from Hongkong for Shanghai, where he is to hold a conference with Mr. T. V. Soong, the Nan- king Finance Minister.
froni Before his departure Canton. Mr. Fan told Chinese correspondents that newspaper between February, 1929, and June, 1930, the Nanking Government, on account of heavy war expendi ture, had borrowed $28,100.000 from Canton.
It is the intention of the Canton authorities to request Nanking to return part of the money, for the furtherance of important re construction works. The Finance Commissioner will also take opportunity to secure the view of Nanking concerning the prepara- tion of the Canton budget for 1931, Mr. Fan stated that the Canton Government also desires to fund to the native banks and Chi- (6850).nese firms in Canton part of their investment on the First, Second (2165). and Third Issues of the Canton Government Treasury Bonds, which amounts to several million dollars.

DARING MURDER.
SHANGHAI MANAGER OF CHINA MERCHANTS..
Shanghai, July 24.
A daring attempt to murder Mr. T. C. Chao, General Manager of the China Merchants S. N. Com- pany, was made on the Bund this morning.
Mr. Chao was fired at by two Chinese. One hullet struck him, grazing the lung, but he is ex- pected to recover.
The motive of the attack is un- known. Reuter.
