VICTIM OF LOK MA CHAU TRAGEDY.

FUNERAL OF MRS. C. S. MADGWICK.

A poignant scene was witnessed at the Protestant Cemetery at Happy Valley last evening, when the funeral took place of Mrs. C. S. Madgwick, wife of the European Police Officer in charge of Lok Ma Chau Police Station," who was killed by an Indian constable in the tragic affair enacted at the lonely police outpost on Monday night.

The respect and sympathy for a colleague stricken with such a terrible misfortune was more than evidenced by the large number of Police officers who fell into line as the cortege passed the Monu- mont. The hearse was covered with a profusion of flowers, while other wreaths were carried by a detachment of some 50 officers who followed behind. The chief mourrer, Sergeant Madgwick, was present while next came the Ina- pector General of Police (Hon. Mr. E. D. C. Wolfe), Mr. T. H. King, (Director of Criminal Intel- ligence), Mr. D. Burlingham, (Superintendent of Police), Mr. W. La Bart Sparrow, (Assistant Superintendent), and many other senior officers of the Police Force. A detachment of Indian con- stables under the two Indian | Assistant Superintendents, Messrs. Mohinder Singh and Nawab Khan, brought up the rear of the official corteze.

At the gate of the cemetery the coffin was borne by police officers to the place of interment, on an upper terrace overlooking the main cemetery, the pall-bearers being Sergts. Wood, May, Mackay, Bartley, Whitcroft and Britton.

The service at the graveside was performed by the Rev. Mr. E. A. Armstrong, Pastor of St. Andrew's Church, Kowloon.

MURDER VERDIGT,

the

At the monthly meeting of the Chinese General Chamber of Com- merce held yesterday afternoon, the proprietors of the Hung Tak Bank, whose five sons and re- latives were murdered while asleep on the evening of May 24th by a man named Li Man-pun, made a representation to Chamber complaining that the verdict of the jury at the Criminal Sessions which found the man guilty while Insane, was wrong. The Chinese bankers held the view that Li Man-pun when he committed the murders must have known the full portent crime.

of his

It will be recalled that Li Man- pun was sentenced on Thursday at the Supreme Court after a lengthy sitting when at the con- clusion of the case Sir Joseph Kemp, the Chief Justice, ordered accused to be detained in the Victoria Gaol until His Majesty's pleasure is known.

In forwarding their long repre- sentation to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Messrs. Fung and Ching, the fathers of the murder-. ed boys, asked why, if Li Man-pun was of unsound mind on May 24th, he selected, sons of his proprie tors, leaving alone the other mem- bers of the Bank sleeping on the sama floors. The Bankers also commented on the murderer's visits to the kitchens to secure the choppers with which he committed the gruesome crime. They con- sidered it unusual that the mur- derer should be so familiar with the whereabouts of the choppers if of unsound mind.
