CINEMA: NOTES.
STAGE STAR-CAPTURED: FOR TALKIES.
Charles Blackford, hoading the cast of "Hell's Heroes," now at the Queen's Theatre, is rogarded as one or the greatest "captures" by the films from the stage.
For ten years Blackford was a stage star, being distinguished by Grant Anderson, in the role of his impressive physique and dam- the gunman's : pupil, literallying red hair, his height of six feet brought the house down with his one Inch and his weight of 185 witticisms and light repartee. pounds. A feature of the play was the fine tattoo dancing by Ronald' Brantford, who acted as Jimmy Reeve, the guardian of the girls. Miss Hamilton was also quite an adept at this.
This delightful Company will stage the "Man from Toronto" to-night.
Universal's "Hell's Heroes" is his second picture, his first being Cecil B. DeMille's "Dynamite."

Tod Browning Adept at Thrillers. Tod Browning's first, all-talking picture for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is an adaptation of the Bavard Veiller stage hit, "The Thirteenth Chair," which, during its long and lucrative career behind the foot- lights, ran for two seasons in New York, three in Paris and two in London. The new dialogue film will be shown on Thursday at the Queen's Theatre."
Veiller's "The Trial of Mary Dugan" was produced as one of the first M-G-M all-talking pic- tures. The audible photoplay proved so successful that studio executives decided to include a dialogue version of "The Thir- teenth Chair," as one of the first releases on the new season's schedule.
Tod Browning, who has directed no less than eight Lon Chaney films during the past three years, was asked to handle the produc- tion of the new mystery thriller.
With the exception of Conrad Nagel and Leila Hyams, the en- tire cast of the new film is made up of British and Hindu players. LORD DAVID CECIL WINS THE HAWTHORNDEN,
Lord David Cecil, younger son of the Marquis of Salisbury, has been awarded the Hawthornden Prize for 1930 for his biography of the poet Cowper published un der the title, "The Stricken Deer." Mr. Stanley Baldwin, announc ing the award at a meeting of the committee at Eolian Hall said;
"I think the selection an ad- mirable one.
"I enjoyed the book very much, I think it is a great book. There is a promise in it of fine work in the future.
"Lord David is young, and he is a hard worker. I hope he will not work too hard-it is a great mistake to write yourself out or try to do too much-but I think we may look in the future to him for first class work, in whatever line he chooses to turn."

shown at the Central Theatre on Thursday for a seven days' run, is one of the most elaborate ventures ever presented on the screen. It is one of the unique big features from the legitimate stage now placed at the disposal of the films with the advent of the talking picture. ""The Cocoanuts" is the real thing musical comedy, singing, dancing, laughing the Broadway stage suc cess, transferred to the cinema.
Groucho, the talky Marxman, has the zipplest flow of lines any mic- rophone ever listened to.. Harpo puts on a dumb show in pantomine that has never been equalled. Chico pults some of the funniest stuff in the whole film. Zeppo gets in some mad jesting when his brother's aren't looking. It'a Marxian fun, alde-splitting fooling.
Berlin's music is irresistible. In addition to the successful songs and tunes of the original production, the music master has introduced a new theme song, "When My Dreams Come True," and Mary Eaton and Oscar Shaw sing it.
