MR. KENNETH BIRRELL SENT TO HOSPITAL.

י.

In a recent essay competition A narrow escape from severe among the Girl Guides of the injury yesterday on the Castle Colony, promoted by the Hong-Peak Road was the experience of kong Society for the Prevention of Mr. Kenneth Birrell, a member of the Salisbury Company appearing Cruelty to Animals, the following at the Star Theatre, Mr. Birrell essay, written by a 14-year-old was in a motor, car, driven by a Guide belonging to the 2nd Kow-friend from the Royal Air Force, loon Company, was awarded first when the machine ran over the road

and was badly, smashed. prize:

There are not very many animals to be found in Hongkong. and those that are in the Colony are not very well treated. Most of these animals are used for domestic purposes. It is hard to make people realise that animals have feelings, and so should not be so badly treated as they are. But there are some animals, kept na pets that may be termed as "spoilt." These become overfed, grow lazy and fat, and live com- fortably. Let us see how pets and domestic animals should be kept, how they are kept, and what im- provements should be made,

Mr. Birrell was. roturning- to Kowloon in a two seater car No. 1716, driven by his friend, and on reaching the fourteenth mile stone at Tsun Wan Tau the car was seen to swerve from side to side and then, after traversing a distance of about one hundred yards, it ran over the road into the cultivated fields about fifteen feet below the road level.

The car itself was badly smashed, but neither Mr. Birrell nor the any serious injury, although it is driver appeared to have received feared that Mr. Birrell sustained internal injuries. He was badly shaken, and practically unconscious, when picked up. With the assle- tance of two members of the St. Andrew's Troop of Boy Scouts, who were passing at the time, the driver succeeded in reviving Mr. Birrell, who received professional attention when Dr. J. P. Fehily arrived on. the scene' shortly afterwards.

Mr. Birrell indicated that he was not injured and that he desired to return to appear at the evening per- formance at the Star Theatre, but on the advice of Dr. Fehily he was taken to the Kowloon Hospital.

When going for a walk round the poorer districts of Hongkong and Kowloon, many ways of ill treatment to eats, dogs, and cows and other domestic animals can be found. One sees dogs with cuts and gashes all over the body, ears, and legs, bleeding and open wounds here and there; and dogs with dirty coats, showing that they have not been washed for some time; and you will also see dogs with cheek bones standing out most prominently. What does all this mean? one may ask. The too often, except when really answer is obvious. The dogs have necessary. not been cared for properly, no cleaning and washing of wounds. no regular baths in a week, and no regular meals a day. If I will ever have a dog. I would see that it will have all its wounds and cuts if it does have any wounds and cuts-attended to; that it has at least one bath a week; and also that it has its proper meals. not less or more.

This should not be. If a person wants to keep a bird shop, that person must see that the birds are com fortable, and given food, and warmth.

I looked out to see what was the matter, and learned from one of the servants that the cat upstairs had eaten up a fish, lying on the table. Then the servant upstairs came in, just in time to see the cat finish the fish. When she saw the cat lick ing its lips, she grew most angry, and being afraid of her mistress too, she picked up the cat and fung it downstairs to the ground floor. It was with much difficulty that the cat was brought back to its senses.
