A strange question this to ask at a time when the whole world is thrilled with the epic achieve- ment of a twenty-two year-old girl! And yet one hears it on every hand. The general impression seems to be that if women as a sex were brave, we need not have been stirred to the depths, as we certainly have been, by the daring feat of Amy Johnson.

Yet it is the case that modern women have been breaking records in the air, on land, and on aes. To which the man in the street replies, "Yes, they do it, but they are afraid in their hearts all the time."

Did not Amy Johnson herself admit that she was terrified at the prospect of that last perious five hundred miles of sea?

And herein, it seems to me, is

...

the real, unanswerable refutation of this libel that women as a sex are not really brave, To realise to the full the perils of a situation, to feel appalled at the prospect, and yet to go ahead and grapple with the danger, that is real courage, the only courage in the end which counts for anything at all.

When we think of the bravery of women, we must remember that it is only by the measure of their fear that we can ever gauge the height of their courage. The dar- ing of a woman is seldom an in- stinct, as it often is with the other sex. It is usually a possession which tas been battled for through sickening minutes" of dread.

י"

Any dentist will admit that a strong man of proved courage often breaks down and becomes weak as water in the operating chair. But all through the ages, woman has been used to waiting

and fearing. So, that she will face the ordeal quietly, even though her fluttering pulse tells its own tale of suppressed terror.

Every big shipwreck records countless instances of herole women, standing by: the sides of their husbands, and refusing to take advantage of the rule of the sea which permits women to be saved first. It is not that they are without fear. Possibly they are shuddering in every fibre of their being at the prospect ahead; but the fear of proving a traitor to their loved ones and to their own code of honour is stronger than any other. This it is which stiles the natural, instinctive fear of death. It is the one fear which most of us women retain to the end of our existence--the fear of self.-A. W.

This wedding-guest-gown, is a striking ensemble of print- ed chiffon in the modish black and white combination. The little jacket has a cape collar whose hem la finished in petal scallops. The frock has a little bertha collar, a belted waist- line and its long, even hemmed skirt is skillfully pieced so that the big pattern of the print is not broken and yet the skirt is insured of its fullness. An arresting hat of black milan struw, trimmed with a wide band of velvet ribbon and velvet flowers, tops it, and the shoes are embroidered crepe de chine.
