VENDORS SCARE.

Considerable damage was done to two of the flower stalls In Wellington Street shortly after ten o'clock this morning, when a motor lorry crashed into them.

Fortunately, the stallholders saw the lorry in time to jump from their seats and thus escape injury. As it was, the stalls of Ab Kee and Shiu Kee were upset, but the others were untouched,

HOTEL CASE POINT.

An assurance to his Lordship that he was not questioning Mr. Eldon Potter's honesty, when they exchanged comments yes- terday morning, was made by

Mr. H. G. Sheldon at the open- ing of to-day's proceedings in the Supreme Court.

The lorry, driven by a Chinese, Swatow, June 11. was passing the spot when the a lapse of some two vehicle swerved and ran into two of the stalls. A plot with wide ramifications was discussed ten or twelve days ago and swift action was taken by the authorities, information being witheld from the public party because some of the plot- ters had influential connexions and partly to prevent undue excitement. Some forty arrests were made-eight ringleaders, certained no doubts as to each others' including the Headmaster of the Middle School, were executed after the discovery made, and twenty to thirty are. still in prison,

The discovery of the plot is said to have been due indirectly to the activity of the Kityang Dis- trict Magistrate. For the last year he has dealt successfully with unsatisfactory characters within his district and in the course of his investigations he came upon evidence which showed connexions with a Swatow organisation.

Eight Executed.

This official sent his prisoner's to Sivatow and under examination they made revelations which led to the arrest of the Headmaster (Mr. Wu), of the Yu-liang Middle School: The school was searched and a great haul was made of Communist literature, documents relating to local organisations, lists of names and, in addition, a stare of weapons and ammunition.

It will be recalled that the flower stalls were recently moved from On Lan Street, after being

COMMONS STATEMENT,

London, June 18.

In the House of Commons to-day, Mr. Arthur Hender- son, the Foreign Secretary, was questioned regarding the 'seizure of the Customs at Tientsin by Marshal Yen Hsi- shan, the Shansi Commander.

In the courac of his reply, Mr. Henderson said that de- spite the unsettled state of the country, negotiations about extra-territorial rights would continue.

Mr. Henderson added that he left the matter largely in the bands of the Minister on the spot-Reuter.

Mr. Wu, the Headmaster, had influential connexions with the Chamber of Commerce which CLEAN: 9 BERTONICS IN TEREZNOJ 325A TJERA KOBİKLİ made the position embarrassing, but he and seven others were speedily executed.

It is highly probable, and there is said to be some evidence, that this organisation was connected with that discovered in the Inter- national Concession on Kulangsu

Island, Amoy,

situated in Wyndham Street, for many years, to the upper section of D'Aguilar Street.

Owing, however, to road repairs taking place at the spot, the stails have been temporarily

accom-

modated in part of Wellington Street, where traffic conditions are at present none too good, owing to the narrowness of the thorough fare.

FAIK TO SHOWERY.

Mr. Potter accepted this and said there was no such question between them. They still played golf together on Saturday after- noons.

Mr. Sheldon, in emphasising this as being obvious that they enter-

Defending counsel thanked Mr. Sheldon for this tributo,

Too Ridiculous.

Before Mr. Rasey continued his examination-in-chief, Mr. Sheldon in addressing his Lordship said:- My Lord, I would like to point out that in the Press there, have ap- peared statements which rather lead people to believe that somet question of Mr. Potter's honesty was raised by me yesterday. This, is, of course, too ridiculous to believe, and I did not intend auch a suggestion.

Mr. Potter: We have no such 15. We between question .still play golf on Saturdays.

Mr. Sheldon:-I have played three years with Mr. Potter and never counted his strokes on any occasion,

Mr. Potter: I thank you for the tribute.

Continuing his evidence, Mr. Rasey, second witness for Messrs, Andersen, Meyer and Co., Ltd., who are the plaintiffs in the case against the Hongkong and Shang- hai Hotels, Co., Ltd., said that in his opinion the thermometers in the storage rooms were placed in the correct positions. A Possible Explanation.

Mr. Rasey said it appeared that

As far as can be ascertained, the Communist force which, suddenly, nine days, ago, overran Sin-hi (a market town of 10,000 inhabitants) was made up of bandits from the Kit-yang hills, new-comers from the Han River (whose passage near work, but when the raiders reached Chaochowfu alarmed that city), the market they turned on the Mr. Hacker experienced difficulty some from the "eight villages" in shops, looted extensively, and made in reading the number of B.T.U.'s Fungahun district, and a small but some captives.
