A charge taken out under the Ordinance governing the protec tion of birds was brought against a young Chinese before Mr. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistracy this morning when he was alleged to have destroyed a bird's nest and to have removed from it three young birds at the junction of Middle and Nathan Roads.

The defendant pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Humphreya said that an Indian constable was on duty in Nathan Road when he observed two men loitering by the trees near Middle Road. He later saw one of them climb up a tree and hand three birds to the man on the ground. One of the birds has since died, but the other twa

were subsequently replaced in the

nest by the Police.

In reply to his Worship the officer said that the dead bird pro- duced was too small to tell what bird it was, but he thought it look- ed like a pigeon.

The defendant told his Worship that he had wanted to rear the birds.

His Worship: Why do you want to rear the birds? Are they sing 'ing birds?

Defendant: Yes.

Did you know that?—Yes. They are known as Kam Ngan Huen and are singing birds.

The sergeant says that they are pigeons-No.

In answer to his Worship, Detec tive Sergeant Humphreys said that the bird's nest had been des-

At the World,

The dramatic career of the fam- ous Broadway singer, and enter tainer, Al Jolson, is depicted with much realism at the "Jazz Singer," the current picture showing at the World. Theatre until Saturday, The story is supposed to be the real life account of Al Jolson who will be remembered for his talkie, "Singing Fool" which attracted much attention here, being 'the first talkie, shown in Hongkong.

In the "Jazz Singer". Al Jolson démonstrates that he is equally capable in his acting in a silent picture,

"Be Yourself."

An amusing comedy, with Fanny Brice in the leading role, is being screened at the Queen's under the title of "Be Yourself." The scenes In this all-talking picture shift from a night-club to the boxing-ring and back In the former Fanny "Brice is shown as the star entertainer and in the latter as the manager of a luckless prize-fighter who in the end wins her love.

Splendid support is given by Ro- bert Armstrong as the pugilist, while Brice is heard to advantage in a number of song hits. The picture is being shown until Satur-
