SIR CHARLES STARMER recently stated at the Publicity Club of Glasgow, that advertis- ing is the necessary fertiliser to make two blades of grass grow where one grew before.

Sir Charles might have taken the argument to a more logical climax.

Advertising

represents. the ground in which the merchant sows the seeds which are to yield

his profit in due season.

But the ground must be careful- ly chosen if the best results ire to be secured.

That is why the enterprising advertiser avoids stale ground.

It must be fresh.......fertile! The daily newspaper is ever: fresh, ever of interest to the readers, and it naturally follows that the greater the number of daily readers, the greater the measure of success from each .from advertising message.. each seed planted.

Every Advertisement in a Newspaper is a seed well planted.

OLD FOES AS FRIENDS. son and her activities landed her

MULTI-MILLIONAIRE AND 100-

YEAR-OLD LADY. "Mother Jones" is still a fiery champion of labour, despite the weight of years and infirmities which confine her to her bed in the home of friends at Silver Spring, Maryland.

She was astounded, to receive on her hundredth birthday, a telegram of congratulation from Mr. John D. Rockefeller, junior, the famous milifonaire.

She declared that of all human beings she had most hated Mr. Rockefeller.

Sixteen years ago there was a strike in the Rockefeller mines, Colorado,

in prison.

"Duty As You see It," Birthday

greeting from Mr. Rockefeller, Junior, reads:

"Please accept my heartiest con- gratulations on your 100th birth- day anniversary.

"Your loyalty to your ideals and your fearless adherence

to your duty, as you have seen it, is an inspiration to all who have known

you.

المي

"May you have continued health and happiness as long as life lasts." "Look at this," exclaimed the old lady, excitedly. "Who would have believed it?

:་ ·

"He certainly has a kind heart. He is a good sport."

Mother, Jones wired the follow- ing reply: "Your good wishes and hopes for continued long life on my 100th birthday came as a happy surprise. Yours is among the messages most appreciated by me.

"Knowing all the responsibilities on your shoulders, I think it was a human act to think kindly of me at this time.

In the fighting between guards and strikers 12 men and 21 women and children were killed.

Mother Jones, the famous labour protagonist who led rioters, then savagely denounced

“Your message was the expres- both the Rockefellers-father and sion of a Christian heart."
