WHY A MINISTER
HAD TO GO.
A THRILLING DRAMA IN THE AFRICAN DESERT.
FULL NARRATIVE.
At last the full and thrilling. story of an African desert drama of over 30 years ago can be told. It concerns an "Empire of the Sahara," and clears up what was once an official-riddle of the sands. Though not properly understood at the time, its beginnings crented a lively sensation, and caused the resignation of the French War Minister.
Now the full narrative has been revealed, for the first, time, by General Jolland (an eye-witness of the affair), in, a lecture at Lorient,
In July, 1899, Captains Voulet and Chanoine, of the French Colonial army, lost their lives In mysterious circumstances on the Chad-road, North of Nigerin.
They were at the head of An expedition sent out to reconnoître the country castwards from the Niger bend towards Lake Chad. Their mission included Lieuten ants Pallier, and Joalland.
The latter is now Gen... Joal- land, who has just retired, and who is the lecturer at Lorient who reveals the full story of the de sert.]
There were also a Dr. Henri, three non-coms, and 700 native men and women.
To be Recalled.
General Joalland is quoted by the Intransigeant as stating that Voulet and Chanoine were guilty of needless cruelties.
Hearing of this, the Governor- General sent a Col. Klóbb and a Lieut. Meynier to relieve them of their commands,
When Klobb overtook the ex- pedition, he was met by Voulet, who threatened him with death if he advanced another step.
Klobb took no notice.
Voulet pave the order to fire, and Klobb fell, shouting "Vive La France," with five bullets in him.
Voulet then harangued the off- eers, saying he had caused Klobb to be killed because he (Voulet) had "resolved to found an empire of the Sahara,"
"I have the troops," cried the self-appointed Emperor of the Desert. "I am my own master:
are you with me or against?"
Lieut. (now Generál) Joalland asked for a few hours to reflect.

Voulet (the would-be Emperor) meanwhile made his proposal to the native non-coms.
These, being unwilling to give up their homes, held a parley with their men.
As a result, the natives decided to bolt to the south-west.
Whether Chanoine wanted to stop the natives or go with them is not known. He ran in their direction and was shot down.
Voulet himself took to the de- sert with a native woman.
But he reappeared after the troops had been reformed by Joal- land and Meynier.
As Voulet approached the camp he was shot dead by a gentry who declared that Voulet fired
first.

JAPANESE AIR HERO.
DEATH RISKED TO AVERT
· DISASTER.
BLAZING PLANE.
The heroism displayed by a young Japanese officer in a blez.. ing aeroplane averted disaster to Hornchurch (Essex) Aerodrome and the occupants of cottages.
Flight Lieut. Kabayashi, of the Japanese Army, who is undergoing a course of instruction with the Royal Air Force, went up in a Siskin fighting aeroplane.
He had only been in the air five minutes when his machine burst into flames at a height of 1,000 feet and began to fall directly over the aerodrome.
It was then the 30-year-old Japanese airman risked death to save his hosts from possible in- jury. The parachute and safety were at hand, but instead he lingered on in the blazing machine manoeuvring with the controls un- til he had set the machine in a nosedive away from the menaced buildings.
Not till then did he jump from the burning machine. His para- chute opened and he landed in a small wood.
His overralls were singed and he was cut and scratched, but otherwise was unhurt.

Eye-Witness's Story.
A vivid story of the crash was told by Mr. W. Taylor, of Man- ning-road, Dagenham..
זיי
watched the aeroplane manoeuvring for a few minutes, when flames burst from the ma chine," he said.
"I expected to see the pilot jump for his life. Instead he remained in the machine. Apparently he was afraid to let the blazing aero- plane fall on the aerodrome and cottages immediately below.
"Then I saw the machine fall into a dive away from the aero- drome, and a second later the pilot | jumped out and. his parachute opened up. The machine was wrecked."
"Before the result of the acci- dent was known, every machine at the aerodrome was ordered up. This step was taken to guard against loss of nerve by pilota," said a leading aircraftman..
