ZADIG?

Amusing, but not very heartening, is the story of Zadig, the young Babylonian who is the hero of Voltaire's philosophical novel.

"Destiny is its sub-title, and the author's intention. Was .to demonstrate his theory that it does not lie within man's power to control the events: of his life.

If the possession of every virtue could ensure happiness, Zading would have been au- premely happy. He was honest, broad-minded, devout, thought- ful, observant, intelligent, and his aim in life was absolutely- altruistic.

He wished to reform the world,

To his astonishment and 'dis- may, the world resented hia: well-meaning efforts, and per- sistently denied him the plea-- sure of doing good to it. In whichever direction he turned Zadig found himself baffled by the malice and stupidity of his. fellows, and had at last to ad- mit his impotence to shape his Town destiny..

The Tost elephant story occurs in this book. A man asked Zadig whether he had": seen the strayed' animal, and was mystifled to receive the re.... ply: "No, but if it is blind in one eye, and has lost a great many teeth it is wandering to. wards the west." These re ferences he made from having seen jagged bites in the grasa by the side of elephant tracks pointing westwards..
