was cross-
There was a tense atmosphere in the Supreme. Court yesterday afternoon when the 15-year-old Chinese girl, the chief witness for the Crown in the Kowloon City murder case, stepped into the witness box and examined by Mr. F. C. Jenkin.
Prior to cross-examining Chan Sam after the tiffin adjournment, Mr. Jenkin said:-In cros-ex- amination of this young woman, which is a very distasteful task, I trust your Lordship will be in- dulgent if it appears at any time I am pressing her. I have a duty to perform but I should have liked to have avoided it,
•
Mr. JenkinIn your statement this morning have you told the truth? Yes.
Then is it a fair summary of your evidence that when you heard the cry of your master "save Kft" and the heavy fall on the floor, ap parently from the sitting, room, that you were alone and bound in the front cubicle?-Exnetly.
You remember giving evidence before the Magistrate in howloon? --Yes.
Did you tell the Magistrate that you were in the cubicle, bound up, and heard your master shout "save life" and that the first prisoner was with you?-Yes, I said that.
This morning you told us, and just now you have told us, you were alone when you heard that cry.
Which is true?-It is true that I was alone in the cubicle when I heard the cry of "save life." The No. 1 had gone out.
to the Then the statement Magistrate, you admit, was true? Yes.
um-

Sound of Body Falling. This morning you have told us the cry of that in addition to "save life" you also heard the sound of the body falling flat on its back and it was a very loud noise? Yes,
So that this morning you told us you did hear something be- sides the cry of "save life." Which is correct? This is true.
In reply to another question, witness said both answers were
true.
With regard to the blood stained curtain, counsel asked:-This morning you told us that the cur- tain was the curtain of the front cubicle, which was your cubicle?
Yes.
Did you tell the Magistrate that that curtain was the curtain of your master's cubicle, the cubicle 7-Yes.
rear
Remarking that in order not to appear harsh he did not mind if witness said the conflictions were described as untrue or mistakes, Mr. Jenkin naked:-What you told the Magistrate was either untrue or a mistake? I made a mistake. Did you also teil the Magistrate that you had a curtain to your cubicle which was the same as this one (exhibit) in texture and the same to look at?-I said that.
Mistake at Magistracy.
So you told the Magistrate that there were two curtains, one in
him that I told him the clog be- longed to Sam Koo.
Your evidenco this morning was to the effect that you did not see anything, in fact, done to your master by way of binding, or violence or ill-treatment in any shape of form?-That is so. I'did not see anything like that done to him!
Mr. Jenkin then handed in Tsang Man-kwal's notebook (this being the interpreter), and asked: Do you remember making any statement to that gentleman (the interpreter) with regard to the third accused at the identification parade? Yes.
Statement to Interpreter.
Did you tell him that you saw third accused put a small erange into your master's mouth ?—I don't remember whether I did or did not, tell him that.
"
If you did till him that and your evidence this morning is true, that was false, was it not? ---- I don't remember whether did say anything to him or not.
Was the only man who came b the front cubicle the first prison-

Girl's Ability to See.
During the whole of the time. you were in the cubicle you could see quite clearly out of that cubicle, couldn't you?--No, I could not because I was facing away from the door,
Witness explained that she was facing towards the side of the cubicle.
Mr. Jenkin: So you would only have to turn your head to sec ous of the cubicle?-But I did not turn my head.
But you could have looked out of the door by merely turning your head? Yes, certainly, if Thad wanted.
Is it your statement that from the time that you were bound by the robber, you" remained stand- ing with your back to the bd. facing the opposite wall?-Yea, i remained in that attitude,

And you did not move your feet or your head until you had heard a noise of footsteps indicating the apparent departure of the bera? Exactly.
Now listen to this. Did you tell the the Magistráte that when first prisoner left you he went to the back cubicle and that you saw that because you put your head out?-Yes.
That was not true was it?--No. Replying to further questions; witness said that a box contain- ing money, belonging to her late a window master, was kept on all in his cubicle. Two other boxes, which belonged to her, were kept in her cubicle.
Mr. Jenkia: The police have told us that these three objects were found in your cubicle tied u; in this handkerchief?-Yes, that is so. I had them all done up and put in a handkerchief and put them inside my cubicle.
When did you do that? Just before I made a report to the police station.
