THE CHURCH INTERVENES IN POLITICAL ISSUES.

Malta, May 1.
An amazing situation has been created by the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church towards the general election campaign here. The Archpriest and parish priest have announced that by order of the Archbishop to all the churches in Malta, whoever votes for the Prime Minister, Lord Strickland, or any of his supporters (members of the Constitutional party) commits & mortal sia.
The Bishop of Gozo recently similarly issued an edict forbidding Constitutionalists to approach Easter communion or receive absolution, forbidding citizens to attend Constitutionalist meetings, or race meetings organised on the occasion of the opening of the Con stitutional Club.

In explanation of the constitu- tional crisis, it is pointed out that the relations between the Govern- ment and the Church were strain- ed last year, when Lord Strick land, who is himself a Catholic, refused to allow Franciscan priest, who is British, t be transferred against his will to Sicilly by order of the Superior of the Community in Malta.

Mr. Saunders was cycling home from his office when shots rang out, and he was seen to fall dend. Indrajit, the son of the editor of the daily paper Arya Samaj, was ar- rested at his father's house, which was searched in connexion with the murder of Mr. Saundera.

The three day Debate on the Government's Coal Mines Bill con eluded in the House of Lords to- day by the House agreeing to the second reading without a division, notwithstanding strong Conserva- tive criticism notably directed at the compulsory amalgamation pro- visions which were inserted in the Bill in the House of Commons at the instance of the Liberals.
The Conservatives foreshadowed important amendments to the Bill 2 in the Committee Stage, thus pro- mising lively discussions between the House of Lords and the House
before the Bill of Commons enacted.

Lord Thomson said the Govern ment would have to take a very firm stand on the Committee Stage. The Bill was a measure of national importance and it was introduced to help the coal industry.
A feature of the debate was the maiden speech of Lord Sankey. who confessed that he still favour. ed nationalisation, which was the remedy advocated by the Coal Commission over which he presid ed eleven years ago-Reuter British Wireless.
