marriage was a bar to the most important positions in the medical profession in Brmingham,
Bishop Humilton Bay: es said the resolution might deprive the hospital of the services of women doctors who would be available.
It was a serious discouragement to women entering the medical pro- fession. On the other hand, it might discourage them from enter- ing the state of matrimony, and lead to undesirable relations be- tween them and men.
Councillor Miss Bartley, chair- man of the board of governors, said the question had arisen follow- ing the application by a married woman doctor for four months' leave of absence because she was going to have a baby.
The governors were intent upon keeping the hospital efficient, and preventing dislocation due to pro- longed absence of members of the staff.
