**CUPIDITY.
HARD-EARNED MONEY LOST
IN GAMBLING.
How the cupidity of two women deprived them of money which had been earned by hard toll, was told to the Magistrate (Mr. Grantham) at the Central Magia tracy on Thursday afternoon, when Chan Wai, a seaman, and Chan Chi, a district watchman, were sent to prison for theft.
The police stated that the locality around Wing Wa Terrace was inhabited mostly by scavenger coolies.
Here, in the open street, in their leisure hours during the day, a gambling school was generally held, in which the money earned by toil in the night, was frittered away in a few minutes in the desire to acquire more by easy
means.
As an instance. it was related that two women, inveterate gam- blers, on the day in question, had between them raised $24, which they staked on a turn of the dice before certain events occurred which led to the present Court pro- ceedings.
Just before cards were dealt out in a game, described, and strange- ly reminiscent of "twenty-one," an interruption unexpectedly came from two men who had invited themselves into the party.
They were Chan Wai, a seaman, and his friend, Chan Chi, the watchman; who, between them; created a diversion by causing a disturbance, breaking up the game, and pouncing on the money then being staked on the prospective
game.
It was said that Chan Chi went further. He announced that he was a representative of the law, as indeed he was, and his first act attendant on that announcement was to grab the $24 belonging to the two unfortunate women. The men.then took to their heels.

There was a hue-and-cry, and while the two men were running. they were intercepted by Bukit Singh, a foreman in the Sanitary Department. Proving his con nexion with the district watchmen force by showing his whistle, Chan Chi was permitted to go away, but was re-arresetd by the Police later when investigations had revealed the truth of the affair.
