ARMED ROBBERS STAB MAN IN THE BACK,

Three robbers, one armed with a knife, attacked the Inmates, a man and his wife, of a matshed in the Nga Chin Wat village shortly after midnight on Friday, when they stabbed the husband and decamped with money and clothing to the value of $23.50.
Searching enquiries were in- stituted by the police immediately receiving a report of the crime, and as a result a man has been arrested. The police are also trying to trace the where- abouts of Chan Lam, aged 37 or 38, unemployed and of no fixed abode. Ite is stated to be known in Tam Shui and speaks Punti and Hakka - dialects. He has a long face, protruding teeth and when last seen was wearing cat- ton clothing and a grey felt hat.
It is hoped that some light has been thrown on the identity of the third man, as Chan Fat, the attacked man, states that he re- cognised the man who stabbed him as Heung Yung, aged 27, who was formerly his foki.

The details of the crime, as contained in a police report, are that about 1 am. on Saturday. Chan Fat, aged 21, a vegetable farmer residing in the Unno dis- trict, was, together with his wife, Tse King, aged 22. sleeping matshed, when the three men entered. One caught hold of the woman by the throat and her placed the other hand over eyes, whilst another attacked the husband with a knife. The two struggled with the assailants and finally succeeded in freeing them selves, upon which the robbers took to their heels, with the farmer and his wife in pursuit. They were chased to the Nga Chin Wai village, where they were lost to sight. The pursuers returned to find a quantity of their money and clothing stolen. This, to- gether with the knife with which the farmer was attacked, was later recovered.
Chan Fat was taken to
the hospital suffering from a knife wound in the back, but his condi- tion is not serious.

HANDBAG SNATCHER THROWS VICTIM TO GROUND.
The maximum penalty of one year's hard inbour and 24 strokes of the birch was imposed by Mr. Whyte Smith at the Kowloon Magistrney on Saturday on à Chinese who pleaded guilty to a charge of snatching a hand bag from a young girl in Dundas Street. His Worship remarked that if he had the power he would have given the defendant a more severe
sentence.
According to the facts, sa de- tailed by Detective Sergeant Fitches, the complainant was walking in Dundas Street accom- panied by a friend at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, when the defendant behind and approached from snatched her handbag. She had a tight hold of it and managed to retain possession of the bag but the defendant threw her to the ground, causing injuries to the her face and knee.
The thief succeeded in accuring. the bag but the complainant raised an alarm by blowing a police whistle. Several pedos- trians joined in the chase, and the defendant was eventually arrested by a sanitary coolie in Kwong Wah Road.
His Worship said that It was a serious case as the defendant had not only snatched the bag from the complainant but had also in- flicted serious injuries to her face and knee by throwing her to the ground.
Addressing Detective Sergeant Fitches, his Worship said that in any of such cases. if the prosecu- tion would like the, defendant committed for trial, he would be quite willing to do it. In the present case he would certainly give the defendant the maximum He supposed that the penalty. prosecution had already consider- ed that question.

In sentencing the defendant to twelve months' hard labour and twenty-four strokes of the birch, his Worship said that if he had the power to do so he would have given the defendant more.
